Is this the end of software development for the I2 Series?

The last update for I2 - 16.11 was half a year ago, and version 17.01, although it has minimal changes compared to 16.11, has been in beta for over 3 months.

Given this and the release of the I3, can we assume that development of the I2 Series has ended? It would be good to get a clear answer from Garmin.

  • Hello. While it is not common to roll out a large number of new features to an already existing watch. The Instinct 2/2x series is still a part of the BETA software program. So new software is still being tested and released to the watch.

  • We bought a watch for 500 dollars (2X), which has not received any updates for more than half a year, including additional functions that cheaper models, e.g. nap detection, sleep coach and more. Instead, you released a new software-updated watch for another 500 dollars, which nobody needs. Please be so kind as to upgrade your 2-X series watch just like the other (cheaper) and older models. If not I informed you, this was my last Garmin watch. I am not willing to accept such a policy of your company.

  • While I do appreciate your answer, I don’t see any new software being released to the watch. I get it, I2 watches were dropped in the last cycle. But there is a new cycle going on and not a single word in the beta section.

  • always buy Fenix and Forerunner, new features and updates will come. Don't buy on instinct, you'll be missing out on the new features that cheaper and older watches get.

  • I don’t mind not getting new features. Most new metrics are more or less gimmicks anyway. But squashing bugs on a model so recent should be a must.

  • If the watch has faults and is under warranty, return it. buy models where Garmin does not allow this to the customer. Phoenix forerunner.

  • I bought I2X specifically for its ruggedness and battery longevity. I had FR255 but it simply felt too fragile. I use it for a bunch of sports including canyoning, white water kayaking, mtb, alpine skiing etc. It suits my needs perfectly.

I’m simply dissapointed it’s abandoned by the company so soon, especially considering its price tag.

  • I went from FR245 to FR955Solar, gave latter to son and go on to I2x for the longer batt life and solar charging. It has all the features I need in terms of fitness (mainly swimming and jogging) and health tracking. In fact, its a budget enduro to me (with comparable batt life and durability), so no complaints there for the price compared to enduro.

Two prevailing bugs still bugs me but found work-arounds to live with it:
#1. To avoid long load time for garmin pay, just need ONE additional press on GPS button to launch activity (dun need to start). This will "wake up'' the watch and next press to load garmin pay via hotkey will start it instantly.
#2. To avoid unexpected, strange battery drain, just soft reset (long press CTRL button until it turn off and on again) the watch after recording each activity and also after charging the watch.
