Instinct 3 main features ?

It is now close to two years from launching Instinct 2 series and I was wondering what would be the main feature(s) that would sell the new Instinct 3 product ?

I'll write few of my own thoughts/wishes and would like to hear from you fine folks...

1. Even better solar performance or maybe even charging on artificial/room light (as many Casio watches do, altought they are ultra-ultra-low power devices, i.e. don't have GPS/HR, etc. etc.):

I recall Instinct 1 had redish/bronze colored solar panel whereas Instinct 2 had more gray/greenish colored panel and had been more solar efficient than Instinct 1 (which was one of its selling points).

Then, on Instinct 2X we see again this "old" redish/bronze panel altough now on larger area thus being even more solar efficient/better than those smaller watches. I know there are many other factors impacting solar/power efficiency but it could be possible Garmin left some room here by possible future use of this seemingly more efficient gray/greenish solar panel on Instinct 3X.

2. Adding on-watch routing in navigation (but not full mapping as in Fenix/Epix):

This means this time roads, pathways, tracks would be visible and on-watch routable as in Fenix, and nothing more than that. For example, very old Fenix 2 had some form of mapping/routing in low-resolution monochrome display ten (10) years ago.

3. Laser beam for measuring nearby distance:

This is a bit streched feature (and probably power mega-hog) but after introducing flashlight into the Instinct series I see this watch more of a tool now :-)

So, what are your thoughts on new Instinct 3 ? Share some of it, go wild ... :-)

  • I'm responding to you, as you can see in the "in reply to" field, cuh. Keep up at the back. You're throwing out ideas for solutions which already exist - you don't need a desktop/laptop to keep your watch updated.

You're wrong, unfortunately. My Instinct 2x stuck at version 14 and the only thing it managed to do was update to some minor subversion of main version 14. The only thing I could do was to connect the watch to my PC and run a full update via Garmin Express software. What's worse, till then, Garmin Connect on my smartphone showed that my device was up-to-date. At the end of the day, access to the current version (15.08) was only possible using a PC with the Garmin Express application. Being an IT expert, I can imagine where the cause lies, but this is not the subject of our conversation. In the shortcut, I suspect the size of the firmware image -- was too big to send it via Bluetooth.

  • That's another edge case scenario, same as with your 3d secure situation. I have 2 instincts and have not had any issues updating them or paying without additional security checks. As an IT expert you would know that no software manufacturer will redesign their product from the ground up because someone somewhere had a glitch that affects only them. That said in your firmware case, even with current hardware they could release a firmware update package which could be side loaded without additional software and run similar to what they do with their beta's. Open a new feature request and maybe they'll consider it.

Hola, Hola. Hold your horses. I have no problems with updating. I just ran the Garmin Express application on my PC and updated the watch manually. Please read all the threads from the beginning and look at who and how I was answering.
Generally, I answered the guy who wrote that he doesn't want to use spyware applications on spyware OS. My suggestion was to apply the OTA to watches, which would resolve his doubts. Personally, I don't complain about the current update style, well, maybe apart from the lack of a software release newsletter or some other push notification. Mainly, If I don't read the forum every day, I won't get the knowledge about releasing the new firmware version. I see room for improvement in functionality here. About the rest of the new features in Garmin Instinct 3x, I wrote my expectations in bullet points and there was nothing about the current firmware update style.

  • This is my case. I bought the watch twice and I returned both times just because the small screen. I know at least that 3 more people returned the watch because small screen of the I2X.

There are rumors talking about the new instinct being released this month: https://www.reddit.com/r/GarminWatches/comments/1cegfqq/instinct_3_release/ .

  • I know people who decided against I2x because of the screen size. Not easily readable by seniors. A 1.4 inch screen display would win many more orders.

  • A 1.4 inch screen display would win many more orders.

I take the opposite view. The advantage of the Instinct over other Garmin solar watches is precisely the large solar surface, which works much more effectively than with other Garmin watches.
As the screen gets bigger, the solar area decreases. That would go against the concept of the Instinct series.

  • There are watches Garmin and not Garmin with an incredible good battery life. In fact, better than the instinct 2x one and with an screen that consumes more power.   Doesn't seem a good idea to fill the screen with solar panels, reducing the usabililty of the watch when it's proven that there are other watches that can do more without sacrificing the screen area.

  • Solar function was never be the fundamental concept of the Instinct series. It's just an extra new feature since line 2 but its usage remained marginal for many people like me who lives in the northern area of the Globe where there's no permanent sunlight all year long. Imagine, I live in Central Europe and I own an I2 solar since 1 and a half year and wear it 0-24h since then. The Solar panel however gained less than 1% of power overall in 1.5 years so having a solar feature is a total overkill for people who are not living in all-year warm / sunny places of Earth... However, I had to buy the Solar version of I2 because I want to pay with my watch and there's no GarminPay without Solar panel in the Instinct line so far...... I do hope, however, there will be a new Instinct release with GarminPay but WITHOUT the blasted Solar function among the I3 line-up. XX

I'm not talking about the battery life with one charge, but about the EFFECTIVE battery life in actual outdoor use. Which Garmin watch lasts longer in sunlight than the 2x ?
