Instinct 3 main features ?

It is now close to two years from launching Instinct 2 series and I was wondering what would be the main feature(s) that would sell the new Instinct 3 product ?

I'll write few of my own thoughts/wishes and would like to hear from you fine folks...

1. Even better solar performance or maybe even charging on artificial/room light (as many Casio watches do, altought they are ultra-ultra-low power devices, i.e. don't have GPS/HR, etc. etc.):

I recall Instinct 1 had redish/bronze colored solar panel whereas Instinct 2 had more gray/greenish colored panel and had been more solar efficient than Instinct 1 (which was one of its selling points).

Then, on Instinct 2X we see again this "old" redish/bronze panel altough now on larger area thus being even more solar efficient/better than those smaller watches. I know there are many other factors impacting solar/power efficiency but it could be possible Garmin left some room here by possible future use of this seemingly more efficient gray/greenish solar panel on Instinct 3X.

2. Adding on-watch routing in navigation (but not full mapping as in Fenix/Epix):

This means this time roads, pathways, tracks would be visible and on-watch routable as in Fenix, and nothing more than that. For example, very old Fenix 2 had some form of mapping/routing in low-resolution monochrome display ten (10) years ago.

3. Laser beam for measuring nearby distance:

This is a bit streched feature (and probably power mega-hog) but after introducing flashlight into the Instinct series I see this watch more of a tool now :-)

So, what are your thoughts on new Instinct 3 ? Share some of it, go wild ... :-)

  • Add/Improve:

    * Bring back the option to disable activity tracking (steps counting). Useful when you want to conserve a battery or track steps from other devices.

    * Add option to turn off seconds on every watch face. Because they are not turning off automatically if you have a background activity running.

    * Add option to run multiple background activities.

    * Improve the full-screen alternative timezones widget like it is on Instinct 1 or Fenix 6, where I can see up to 4 alternative timezones without scrolling. Well, the compromise here I guess is how many zones you can have set in total.

    * Give an ability to add more timezones on the watch face, besides the first one in the list.

    * Bring back the full-size moon phases in the round corner window, like it was on Instinct 1.

    Don't add/Remove/Fix:

    * Fix the washed out screen while viewing from the down up angle, when the backlight is on. On Instinct 1 I was able to read the display perfectly while driving, without taking left hand from the wheel. With Instinct 2 it is absolutely white and unreadable.

    * Remove dirt-attracting sandpaper ring around the bezel, which is a nightmare to clean. The same goes for overly textured buttons. This was a downgrade from Instinct 1.

    * Do not switch back from the watch face to the current activity screen automatically after a timeout, like its the case on Fenix 6. I would like to have a background activity running while seeing the watch face or any full-screen widget, or even the glances list, or running timers.

    * Disable the limit for how many saved timers you can have or how many alarms. 10 is too low. At least 25. Or no limit.

  • I would like to see a double sided flashlight - I wear my watch on the palm side of my wrist (so I don't press any buttons while working out or in general and so that I don't keep hitting the watch on random corners), so the flashlight points toward my face.

So either make it double sided (position 12 and 6) or even better rotate it 90 degrees (9 and 3).

  • On youtube i read replies about a Instinct Pro version is coming. Maybe not Instinct 3 but Instinct 2 Pro? Wink

We have to wait and see what is right...Sweat smile

  • One word…or idea. Keep the minimalist approach. Add obviously the improvements in chips/sensors.

But additional release a Garmin MARQ Instinct - one model with a premium material eg titan / carbon / ceramic mixture.  And sacrifice a bit of the amazing battery life to make it thinner, to fit under a shirt and giving it a sleek look.

  • Dcrainmaker described the Instinct2X as a Fenix7 MiniMe. For those that dont have the deep pockets for a F7P Garmin could still improve display size and memory. I2X cannot cannibalise sales from the F7P line. Hence the numerous deficiencies such as limitations in GPS tracking etc. My wish list would include a reasonable expansion of the display size without making the watch much bigger (my eye sight is terrible). I know everyone in my circle that has an I2x (my age too) has this problem wishing for larger display sizes. Like others have said before, with falling prices for storage, the next Instinct should increase on board storage.

  • The I2X with enough solar exposure daily and depending on how you use it, can theoretically last forever without needing to be charged. I would gladly trade that feature for a bigger display. For the vast majority, usability trumps longevity. A 30 odd days charge retention is good for most of us. Give us a bigger display and more storage.

  • A display size increase from 1.1" x 1.1"  to 1.3" x 1.3" would be great.
