Instinct 2X for RowErg and SkiErg: questions

Hi all,

I'm pondering the purchase of an Instinct 2X. Only activities I do are on Concept2 RowErg and SkiErg and I log the sessions on Concept2 logbook (HR coming from a chest strap broadcasting via ANT, logging to c2 logbook done via smartphone and ErgZone or ErgData).

I'd like to use the I2X for physiological measurements, but I'm a bit lost on what I'll have/not have. My understanding (potentially wrong) and some questions:

  1. Training Load Training Effect: yes. Correct ?
    1. I'm not sure if I can log the data only on the c2 logbook and enable the forwarding of it to Garmin Connect (if I'm not wrong, this is supposed to work since march 2023) or if i will have to record the activity on the I2X at the same time (connecting it to the PM5 via ANT FE-C). Any idea ?
  2. Training Effect: yes. Correct ?
    1. Same question as 1.a: log via concept2 only or must log on I2X ?
  3. Training Readiness: yes. Correct ?
  4. Training Status: no. Because this requires VO2 estimation that is done only via running or cycling. Correct ?

Thanks in advance !

  • I know that, but it still doesn't explain why it happens only on some days.

BTW can't be walking (only logged 1 waking activity in more than 1 month). Or maybe it detected walking thanks to Move IQ (that I switched off yesterday) and estimated VO2max from that ?

  • BTW can't be walking

That's why I wrote that your VO₂max comes more likely from the all-day HR.

but it still doesn't explain why it happens only on some days

Probably because you did not meet the minimal time and HR level every time. They do not write what the criteria for the VO₂max from the all-day HR are, but at running and at walking it is 10 continuous minutes above 70% of the Max HR. Then also, if you record some activities directly with the watch, it may suppress the VO₂max from the all-day HR for 30 days. All of this is described in greater details in the mentioned article.

  • Thanks for the reply. Interesting! What are you using to the longer PB→VO2Max calculation? (Rowinglevel?) The C2 formula was built on the 2Ks. I've used Paul's law to extrapolate longer pieces back to 2k to do it that way, but saw good consistency in the VO2max estimation. But maybe you are just much stronger at the longer pieces. I skew the other way, weaker at anything over 5k. But I'm out of the lightweight category these days.

  • When I train (without recording any activity) I train for 1 / 1.5 / 2hrs, at least 4 days a week.  HR levels are usually high to very high (80-95% MHR). I don't see VO2max points for these days

All this is so opaque that it's essentially pointless.

  • Yes, RowingLevel, C2 estimation is only for 2K.

  • OK, so I asked Garmin Suppoort (in France). The reply is disappointing (translation from french is mine, almost word-by-word):

"Your Garmin watch is not compatible with VO2Max estimation but VO2Max can be estimated by Garmin Connect from your manually imported activities"

As the 1st part is obviously wrong (I2X has VO2Max feature), now I'm skeptical about the 2nd part (VO2Max estimated from manually imported activities, noteven sure this includes 3rd party forwarded activities).

  • The second  part is wrong too. Looks like the person answering you, was really completely ignorant.

  • Wow. That is disappointing and clearly wrong! I do think we've generally understood what is going on here. It is disappointing that Garmin doesn't provide more insights into the all-day VO2Max estimation and how it intersects with imported activities. Maybe now that they are releasing their front-end overhaul they can turn to the data model / backend ...

  • Is this still working? I have concept2 logbook connected to Garmin connect, see the workout I did in Garmin connect, but the workout doesn't seem to be updating tl te or tr. I'm using ErgZone to record the workout

  • Still works for me. RowErg (logged via ErgZone) and SkiErg (logged via ErgData) sessions are both forwarded by c2logbook to Garmin Connect. Both kind of sessions seems to influence my Training Load and Training Readiness, and I do see the training Effect in each activity stats.

In fact, I even get VO2Max estimations but it's not every day: some days there's no data point, some day the data point is obviously wrong (I usually hover at 63 which is plausible, but next day it can dip to 40-something and two days after come back to 63...). The days it seems to be better (i.e. data point is there and value makes sense) seems to be the days where I have at least a SkiErg session.
