Instinct Crossover Solar Scratches on Screen (part 2)

Managed to get a pic of scratches on my crossover’s screen. As I said in my last post these are only visible under certain lighting conditions and at a certain angle.

The watch itself is not treated roughly at all and I’ve no idea what could be causing these scratches, but the screen/lense should not be this easy to scratch Smirk

  • I have the same problem as you. When I pass the finger on top I do not feel any scratches, feels like they are from the inside.

  • They are hard to feel as they seem to be light surface scratches. I’ve found that if I very lightly run a finger nail over them I can feel some of them, obviously the slightly deeper ones. Never had this problem at all previously with either the Fenix 6 Solar or instinct 2 Solar I owned.

  • I have learned one thing from watches. Only sappfire or screen protector. I have scratched every watch that was not sapphire and i dont know how. Maybe it is coating thats is scratched?

  • Thanks for that. You might be right about having to use a screen protector, though it shouldn’t be necessary on what is supposed to be a ‘rugged’ watch!

  • This is a quite interesting topic, considering the target "audience" for the Instinct series. I do not have yet an Instinct Crossover, but I am seriously considering it.

I like hybrid watches, in fact I had a Vivomove HR for about two and half year and I have owned a Vivomove Style Silver for almost three now.

I wear the Style all the time and I am not very gentle to it... I do hiking, swimming, scuba diving, running, mountain biking, fix things around the house, etc. wearing it. The glass is spotless, although the aluminum case does have a few very small nicks and dents.

Curiosity had the best of me, so I took the time to compare what Garmin spec for the "Lens Material" of the Style, Instinct Crossover and Instinct Crossover Solar:

    - Style: domed Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3

    - Instinct Crossover: chemically strengthened glass

    - Instinct Crossover Solar: Power GlassTm

I suppose the Gorilla Glass should be the more robust of the three, although a more shatter-resistant glass may not necessarily be the most scratch-resistant too.

Chemically strengthened glass appears to be pretty strong too, at least according to the information I found:
    http://www.xinology.com/Glass-Mirrors-Products/chemical-strengthen/overview/vs-thermal-temper-glass.html

That leaves the Garmin Power GlassTm. Garmin state this about it vs other type of glass:
    https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=YuVXd59OaH7y55N9OL9BZA

So, the Power Glass is a type of Gorilla glass (good), although as expected it is not as scratch resistant as Power Sapphire (no surprise there, I guess). What seems surprising to me is that, from what the OP reported, it appears to be less scratch resistant than the Gorilla glass found in other watches, like my Style, which ironically is not a "rugged" watch.

If the Instinct Crossover Solar glass is so prone to scratching I may just go with the "standard" Crossover. I know that seeing scratches on the lens would drive me nuts Smile

  • Thanks for that, some good info. there!

What I find surprising is the Fenix 6 solar I had is also listed as having 'power glass' for the lens, the same as the instinct crossover solar. Yet I owned the Fenix 6 far longer than I have so far owned the instinct crossover solar and the screen on the Fenix 6 solar was still spot less when I eventually sold it.

Also, I was far more active with the Fenix 6 solar so would have expected the lens on that to be more 'scratched up'. Also, if I remember rightly, the lens on the Fenix 6 solar was slightly more exposed than on the instinct crossover solar.

Thinking of looking at the instinct 2x solar now as the screen is more protected than on the crossover, just not sure if my 'weedy' wrists will be too small for it! Sweat smile

  • Yeah, the Instinct 2X is huge, my wrist is not that big either. Another intriguing plus of the 2X is the presence of a Gyroscope. I believe no other Instinct watch has it. Too bad Garmin did not put one in the Crossover as well.

I have both.  Crossover rarely gets worn after getting an I2X.  I2X is a nice size, not as big as f fenix7X.

  • Same for me. After couple of scratches I've bought a screen protector, so we're good for now

  • Very interested in your feedback. What is it that you like better in the I2X vs the Crossover?
