Instinct 2 Solar (Tactical) "Washed Out" Display: Anyone else having this problem w/their display?

   T

The GI2 (on right) is much more "washed out" and closer to purple when compared to the original's vibrant blue (on left); both are backlit to 100%. Moreover, the viewing angle on the GI2 is simply terrible... clearly, the new "domed" PowerGlass does not add one of the primary advantages of having a domed crystal which is improving the visibility at acute angles (especially underwater) by mitigating light reflectiveness. I'm not impressed at all. As opposed to the original solar models, the new GI2s have a "full" solar panel behind the display, so this may be the cause of both the tint and viewing discrepancies; I've contacted Garmin support and am waiting for some explanation... hopefully it is just that I may have a defective watch (which can then be replaced by Garmin).  Also, much as I appreciate the improved display resolution of 176x176 (which does make the text look crisper), they've taken advantage of that to make the overall text smaller in order to fit more data displayed on the screen size; that's all well and good, but it does make it more of a strain for legibility... not all of us have a 25 y/o sight. As usual, Garmin did incorporate a font size setting; I've provided them with that feedback and feature suggestion, so hopefully they will add that in a future update.  Has anyone else noticed this issue?

  • So are you saying there's a conspiracy where Garmin employees post on Reddit to downvote people and to post positive stuff about Garmin?

    Like really?

  • Of people who interacted in this thread. Do you need me to count for you?

  • You are saying there is a conspiracy of Garmin customers out on a crusade against the company and their newest Instinct series, using "doctored" footage?

    Like, really?

  • Congrats, you fed the troll. Slight smile

Btw i don't think he's a Garmin employee, otherwise he would have used the proper channel for a feature request (split bottom data field on GI2's watch face) instead of demanding for it on the forums.

Edit: On the other hand, that user gets away with his toxic behavior and comments like calling valid customer complaints "being Karens" without getting banned or perma-flagged by mods. Unlike other users who reported they got cancelled by abusing the reporting feature, apparently he doesn't (despite him admitting he received several abuse reports for his comments)... So maybe you are right after all. ;)

  • Would that number be representative of ALL customers?

  • Your guess would be as good or bad as mine, since only Garmin has insights on the number of sales/returns and individual customer complaints.

But since I specified that I meant the majority of users in this thread here and didn't talk about the total population of GI2 owners, you can keep your strawman.

I don't know about this forum, a user on reddit who worked in those departments before said this is how it's done on reddit. It is not coming from me. And I can see this behavior really. The most informatory posts on Reddit Garmin forum are those downvoted the most. And those useless posts just praising a Garmin device get upvotes as hell. Really strange... It is much better here actually though.

But I am sure there are people in every forum of every brand posting good or bad stuff with intention. Good if they are hired by this company, bad if they are hired by a competitor. But of course it is the minority. As you said, maybe just a troll.

I understand anyone saying he has not seen this issue on his or her device. But bashing others because they have an issue or defect or bad quality device is really just trolling or like this guy on reddit said, maybe intentional...

  • Yes, your photos are better than the ones that started the discussion. Like I said, I don't want to argue, but I use the backlight in complete darkness. In very low light, just have a backlight of 5% and you can see the display well. It depends on how you use it. It can be a serious shortcoming for someone, but for me it is a small thing. The benefits outweigh. It sometimes occurs to me that people are looking for disadvantages only. It is quite strange that, for example, the testers did not even point this out. For example (DC RainMaker). One thing is also a video or photo and another thing is, seeing it in real life.

  • a user on reddit who worked in those departments before said this is how it's done on reddit. It is not coming from me.

And you felt it necessary to post that nonsense here. What was your intention?  You say the fanboys down vote the most informative post and up vote the useless ones. Is it really any different than posting unsubstantiated and ridiculous claims whether they where from a second hand source or not?

  • When we pay for something which offers certain functions/options we can expect it will work as promised. That's why you won't find here too many comments saying how awesome this watch is. Generally I'm happy with new Instinct but as I mentioned before I would gladly welcome these new features as big software update for Instinct 1 (even if I would have to pay for it).

So it's hard not to mention that new display has one big disadvantage compared with Instinct 1. Of course not for everybody, but still there is no reason to say benefits overweight when it's hard to argue it is clear design flaw (Instinct 1 showed that worst display angles can be rotated in the way that nobody will notice it unless he is an alien and can rotate hands in strange ways).

BTW All photos I uploaded to this thread show real effect of this issue, there is no difference between reality and photos.
