Instinct 2 Solar (Tactical) "Washed Out" Display: Anyone else having this problem w/their display?

   T

The GI2 (on right) is much more "washed out" and closer to purple when compared to the original's vibrant blue (on left); both are backlit to 100%. Moreover, the viewing angle on the GI2 is simply terrible... clearly, the new "domed" PowerGlass does not add one of the primary advantages of having a domed crystal which is improving the visibility at acute angles (especially underwater) by mitigating light reflectiveness. I'm not impressed at all. As opposed to the original solar models, the new GI2s have a "full" solar panel behind the display, so this may be the cause of both the tint and viewing discrepancies; I've contacted Garmin support and am waiting for some explanation... hopefully it is just that I may have a defective watch (which can then be replaced by Garmin).  Also, much as I appreciate the improved display resolution of 176x176 (which does make the text look crisper), they've taken advantage of that to make the overall text smaller in order to fit more data displayed on the screen size; that's all well and good, but it does make it more of a strain for legibility... not all of us have a 25 y/o sight. As usual, Garmin did incorporate a font size setting; I've provided them with that feedback and feature suggestion, so hopefully they will add that in a future update.  Has anyone else noticed this issue?

  • I have both IS 1 Solar and IS2 Solar Tactical, and if I didn't come across this thread, I wouldn't know that visibility is worse.

I don't have the previous gen Instinct but am sure I'd google the "why does my IS2 display look washed out" within days of using it. Some of you cats need to back off and stop gaslighting others. You might not be bothered, you might not care because you're happy to compromise for other features - that's fine. But trying to tell others that they shouldn't voice their opinions because yours is more valid like the 9641143 cat (hence why this thread is 28 pages and counting) sounds like a bit of bigotry to me, would you agree?

  • I'm not sure I understand you. English is not my native language. But as I wrote before. There are photos where IS 2 is shot at a sharper angle to be disadvantaged, that started the discussion. The fact that the viewing angles are not the same is clear, it is due to the construction of another display, but it occurs to me that this is a detail. The vast majority of users won't even notice. The reviewers didn't even say anything like that. He always pulls this thread out of the grave. :-)

I hope you're not building your argument around a technicality of OP's pictures not being aligned to the 100th of degree? Because there are subsequent pictures in this thread which clearly show the effect and that this effect is clearly visible and it gets worse the more you twist your wrist. And that solar is more impacted than the non-solar. And that Instinct 1 was better in this respect (whilst having lower resolution screen which has nothing to do with this issue, since it's a different feature - more pixels doesn't equal polarisation).

The vast majority of users won't bother to come here to complain, majority will take it as "that's just how it is, guv". But that doesn't mean that this is not something that shouldn't be discussed and that those see this as an issue shouldn't voice their opinion. Or that they should be called Karens, which BTW is a derogatory stereotype which typically describes white women who complain about declining standards - funnily enough, you could argue that people who are in this thread are actually complaining about declining standards and they have full right to do this.

  • I certainly don't base my argument on that. But I find it cheap to shoot one watch at a worse angle and claim how awful it is. Yes, visibility is slightly worse from extreme angles, but who uses these angles, and why exaggerate the problem? It's due to a different technology and people who think IS2 will be the same in everything as IS1 is weird. Garmin did not say anywhere that the display was the same, on the contrary that it was different. I gave photos and videos that the problem is tiny, not the one in the photos, where IS2 was intentionally taken at a certain angle. As I said, if I didn't go to this forum, I wouldn't even notice the difference between IS1 and IS2 on display, and I had both for almost a month and did the tests myself. everyone has the opportunity to return the watch if they are dissatisfied. For the vast majority of users, the benefits of IS2 outweigh. If you don't like it, you can return the watch.

  • Don't even bother interacting with him and that other shill. They absolutely try to discredit all users here that share the sentiment that the GI2's display is worse than the predecessor's in certain situations, due to the polarisation effect. They also disregard the various different photos and videos circulating online that highlight the issue from different perspectives and in different scenarios and just repeat the that claim there is only doctored, edge case footage and everyone but them is wrong and on some kind of crusade. I believe it's called going off the deep end.

Thankfully, they keep this thread alive and visible on top of the forum threads. ;)

  • Please check again my photo few posts before. This "worse angle" is typical position for right handed person when you want to look at the watch without bringing it directly in front of the eyes. Even if you can see something there it is far from being comfortable and pleasant to look at. Yes, you're right and Garmin is right, too: screen is different. Producer chose worst possible polarisation (or whatever it is) rotation angle for majority of people.

Actually... the same "different" display you can find in Instinct 1 when you rotate it by 180deg.

And this higher resolution display is nothing to write home about it in this case. I've put one more line at the main watchface. Fonts are more polished and probably this higher res made one person unhappy with GI2S yellow watch here. Please let me know if I missed anything according to highres.

  • The amount of fanboy gaslighting this thread has accumulated is beyond belief.

  • Thankfully it's only two or three very vocal users, not the majority.

For sure. Seeing this is a Garmin forum, there aren't many, and mostly the same. Reddit is much worse. You post some bug/defect/disadvantage of a device and everything gets downvoted. The most useful posts gets downvoted the most, even though they are often very helpful and people find those posts helpful. And praising Garmin gets upvoted a lot. Some user who has inside said on a post of mine on reddit there are a lot of Garmin managers and people hired by them there who downvote everything and often post untrue positive stuff to make their products look good. I find this forum here much less worse then reddit.

Still you see who is a fanboy or a Garmin employee or hired by them. Everything wrong Garmin does seems ok to them. Always defending Garmin.

"Garmin doesn't say they put the same display in as on the I1 series so it is ok that the much more expensive I2 has displays built in of worse quality." OMG. Hahaaaaa.

  • Majority of what pool?
