Instinct 2 Solar (Tactical) "Washed Out" Display: Anyone else having this problem w/their display?

   T

The GI2 (on right) is much more "washed out" and closer to purple when compared to the original's vibrant blue (on left); both are backlit to 100%. Moreover, the viewing angle on the GI2 is simply terrible... clearly, the new "domed" PowerGlass does not add one of the primary advantages of having a domed crystal which is improving the visibility at acute angles (especially underwater) by mitigating light reflectiveness. I'm not impressed at all. As opposed to the original solar models, the new GI2s have a "full" solar panel behind the display, so this may be the cause of both the tint and viewing discrepancies; I've contacted Garmin support and am waiting for some explanation... hopefully it is just that I may have a defective watch (which can then be replaced by Garmin).  Also, much as I appreciate the improved display resolution of 176x176 (which does make the text look crisper), they've taken advantage of that to make the overall text smaller in order to fit more data displayed on the screen size; that's all well and good, but it does make it more of a strain for legibility... not all of us have a 25 y/o sight. As usual, Garmin did incorporate a font size setting; I've provided them with that feedback and feature suggestion, so hopefully they will add that in a future update.  Has anyone else noticed this issue?

I'm having similar issues with the descent G1 as everyone is here on the instinct solar.

  • Had another thought yesterday; it would absolutely not surprise me if it turns out they installed the lens bottoms up and thus messed up the polarization. It would explain why suddenly without any mention of it, the top glass is slightly concave/ not flat. XD

  • Dang it... I was considering trading in for that one upon return it to Garmin ( they had discussed offering a discount/credit towards another product if I RMA).  Well, seems like divers should be wearing their watches on the "inside of the wrist" as well, lol.  I've been doing it wrong all this time.

  • Haven't heard anything more from Garmin in another week. Starting to think this wont be resolved. Might be looking at a return and the coros vertix for $50 more instead, Unfortunate i really wanted to like this watch. Bet 6 months from now I'll walk into REI with the display rotated correctly but not a word on here from Garmin.

  • Do you find it to be a deal breaker? I noticed the same but the benefits of the new watch outweigh the screen issue for me.

Or is it based more on principal. The idea that it should be a better screen for the price.

  • It's a bit of both.

At first I planned on keeping the device through the issue. I still believe this is not intended behavior, and fixable. But Garmin is refusing to do so either through lack of understanding by higher ups or to save cost. It is upsetting on principal but at first I thought worth keeping.

But now over the last few weeks of usage every time I view my watch at any angle but straight on with a washed screen I just get irritated. It happens at least once a night. Even though this is a outdoors watch I spend 90% of my time indoors at night as do most of us I believe. And trying to check the time in bed or view weather for the next day and having to view my watch at the perfect angle has become more irritating as time has gone on.

It's frustrating as my SO is part of the Garmin ecosystem and I enjoy sharing progress with her through Garmin Connect. But the more the screen problem is getting in the way, the more I find myself wanting to jump ship.

  • HAHAHA, like I previously mentioned, after having a Vertix, you threatening to go Coros only meana you'll be back. They are that bad.  Have fun with a broken altimeter out of the box that the company absolutely refuses to fix.  The company just constantly lies and tells everyone to use workarounds for all the stuff they can't fix because Coros Wearables is a marketing company made to look like the company is American while the real company is in Guangdong and they work really hard to hide it and what they're doing with your data.

Again, saying you're going Coros only means you'll be back.  My Vertix was that bad and enjoy the inevitable failed battery.

  • Perhaps. Thats one of the reasons I use REI. If a product is bad they have a great return policy. Fenix 6 pro is $500 right now so only $50 more. I was considering that as well.

  • I shop at REI also.  Those are good people that are part of that co-op.  It reflects bad on you that you want to shaft them with a bad purchase you're being warned about.  I gotta be honest, while this thread is of major interest to me, it really sounds like a bunch of whiney Karens getting all uoset that Garmin isn't answering them and they will teach Garmin a lesson by punishing themselves by going with Coros which are glorified beta products with tons of problems they refuse to fix because they can't, so they lie instead.  Not only that, they're simply off-brand copies of Garmin, but because of marketing, we don't see them as the poorly-developed copies of Garmin they are.

Here's a tip: you don't threaten someone by saying you're going to basically punish yourself if they don't answer you.

  • Few problems with your opinion. First being it's your opinion. No offense but one stranger's opinion on a product is not enough to shift the plenty of good opinions on a product. So forgive me for using REI for exactly what they designed their year long product return policy for. Returning products that do not live up to expectations.

Second I didn't make any threats. I following exactly what Garmin's product services told me. Return the product if it does not live up to expectations. What you conceive as a threat is exactly how goods and services work.

No offense but the only person coming off as a "Karen" is you when you judge others for sharing their own opinion on product.
