Instinct 2 Solar (Tactical) "Washed Out" Display: Anyone else having this problem w/their display?

   T

The GI2 (on right) is much more "washed out" and closer to purple when compared to the original's vibrant blue (on left); both are backlit to 100%. Moreover, the viewing angle on the GI2 is simply terrible... clearly, the new "domed" PowerGlass does not add one of the primary advantages of having a domed crystal which is improving the visibility at acute angles (especially underwater) by mitigating light reflectiveness. I'm not impressed at all. As opposed to the original solar models, the new GI2s have a "full" solar panel behind the display, so this may be the cause of both the tint and viewing discrepancies; I've contacted Garmin support and am waiting for some explanation... hopefully it is just that I may have a defective watch (which can then be replaced by Garmin).  Also, much as I appreciate the improved display resolution of 176x176 (which does make the text look crisper), they've taken advantage of that to make the overall text smaller in order to fit more data displayed on the screen size; that's all well and good, but it does make it more of a strain for legibility... not all of us have a 25 y/o sight. As usual, Garmin did incorporate a font size setting; I've provided them with that feedback and feature suggestion, so hopefully they will add that in a future update.  Has anyone else noticed this issue?

  • Ha!   Total BS answer!   Wow talk about a stretch!   There’s  a pic of a I2 tactical posted this morning on Reddit.  Dude or dudette looks like a chopper pilot. And they’re not wearing it on the underside of their wrist.  Who wants to tell them they’re wearing it wrong!   Ha!

  • After reading the response given to the other user, I have sent my own email complain to customer service. I hope to hear back soon. As I don't have the tactical version of this watch but am experiencing the same issue, I can't see why wearing it on the inside of my wrist would ever be relevant..

  • Why not take a picture from the same angle. It can be seen that IS 2 has a different angle than IS1. Can you put a photo from the same angle here?

  • what about users like me who have bought it in an other shop than the garmin site?

  • So IOW, the Solar 2 is out, off the list as a purchase option...

  • I have the same problem with my 2s non solar

  • The pictures do show the two watches, side by side, at the same angle.

  • The new features are great, and the more compact/streamlined aesthetic is nice... I've encountered no issues with the software and functionality; but for me, because I do rely a lot on the backlight, and because I often am required to view it at an angle, yes... it's a no-go, and will be returned.  It's difficult (and often unlikely) to clearly read the display under those circumstances, and the smaller-sized system font (which cannot be adjusted) only makes it worse... lol, I need to be able to clearly read the watch!  The minute we mentioned "polarization" Garmin then decided to say that it was an intentional design feature, so that "Tactical" users can easily read the screen while it is  viewed from a top - down angle (while wearing the watch on the inside of one's wrist ); well then, thank goodness us "tactical" user wear reflective plate-carriers and body armor, so as to reflect the sunlight and maximize use of the "solar" feature while the watch is facing inward all day, lol.  That still doesn't explain why it is so on non-solar and non-tactical models, but....yeah.  Guess we should all make the "inside the wrist" wear the norm, and the standard wear the exception if we want to use the Instinct 2.

  • The 'tactical users wear it on the inside of their wrist' explanation is a new low for Garmin.

It makes absolutely no sense! More than 95 percent of users wear a watch on the outside of their wrist.

I am absolutely sure that the polarisation filter was simply put in the wrong way, and no one cared to check it, because of shabby quality assurance.

  • Exactly.  If they simply would admit to that (or at least acknowledge that it is being revised), and give user that have a problem with it the option to exchange it via RMA once a corrected production run is available, I think we'd all be good2go with Garmin;  and they should do that now while sales haven't peaked on the Instinct 2.  But if they do nothing but provide lame excuses, then I, for one, will be through with Garmin.  Maybe it'll be the final push towards COROS.
