Garmin Fenix 8 Pro ITA

  • Well, it seems like a wise thing to do since there was the same problem with the 945 LTE, and it came out only 3 years ago, what do you want in 3 years it was very difficult to solve the network management problem. I got tired and after 10 years of Garmi I switched to Suunto, at least I pay half as much.

  • LTE-M global coverage remains quite limited

  • Guys, good morning, one last question. I currently have an Italian inReach subscription that I use on the Montana 710 and can transfer to other devices like the Mini. If I were to buy an Fenix 8 Pro in France, since it looks like it will take a long time to arrive here in Italy, and then transfer my inReach subscription to the F8 Pro, do you think LTE will work in Italy? Thanks everyone for your help

  • If I understand things correctly, these new watches use LTE-M networks, not LTE, also known as 4G. And according to the link just above your comment, there is no provider for LTE-M in Italy yet. So my guess would be that it won't work, but the In-reach part should. Probably why Garmin decided to not launch the watch in Italy until it doesn't work there.

  • isn't this an obsolete technology? I doubt there will be any changes in this regard.

Maybe Garmin will update to 5G in the next devices

  • I don't claim to be an expert on this, I just looked some stuff up, but as you can see from the link in 7000518's comment, even LTE-M's deployment is not complete in Europe, and the next generation for this is called 5G NR-Light (RedCap) was standardized only in 2022 and there are only experimental networks supporting it in Europe.

These are not the same as 4G/5G standards, they are low power networks for wearables, industrial applications, smart meters, IoT devices, etc. that can receive/transmit data with a lot lower power requirements.

So I think it's like WiFi... even though there is now WiFi 7 as a standard since 2024, you won't see Garmin watches that will rely only on WiFi 7 for a long time, as most people don't have compatible access points at home.

Same with this... it will be quite a few years until the 5G NR-Light networks will have a global coverage so that it makes sense to release a watch that uses it.

  • It is quite confusing, because on that link LTE-M there is no coverage on Italy/Portugal. But Garmin Fenix 8 Pro supports LTE in Portugal. And on the other hand Fenix 8 Pro does not support LTE in Czech Republic but it is still sold there unlike Italy.

  • It's new tech for the IoT, garmin is piggy backing for comms

Mah!
