Why do I have to keep my Garmin Fenix 8 connected to Wi-Fi?

Good morning,
This might be a silly question, but could someone explain to me why I have to keep my Fenix 8 always connected to Wi-Fi (supposedly draining the watch's battery), even though it's constantly connected (and updating) to Garmin Connect via Bluetooth?

  • You don't need to keep it connected. Disconnect WiFi in settings.

  • just switch it off. Wifi is just a second/alternative method for syncing the watch. Afaik the only thing you definitely need it for is updating the map data. But even then the alternative is to do it old-school via USB and your computer (Garmin Express app).

  • The watch uses Wi-Fi for upload only when it cannot connect to the phone (or when it needs to transfer huge amounts of data, like maps or music). If your phone is nearby - the watch will use Bluetooth connection to the phone for uploads.
