Autoshot not working on Fenix 8 post 15.33 release

Garmin-Cody has made several posts on other threads inferring the Autoshot feature on the golf app is fixed with recent software version 15.33 for Fenix 8. I can attest to the fact that it is, in fact, not working at least 70% of the time. I play golf almost every day. Have spoken with the Golf Team at Garmin, sent them pictures, app data dumps, etc. Just got done with a round a few hours ago and, if this app is fixed, you got problems! I am not using any sensors, just the Fenix and the associated iPhone app

Not interested in bickering as to the success of 15.33. Much more interested in being involved with the real fix. Willing to send any information from my watch to help

As an aside, my wife’s vivoactive golf app is working perfectly! Should be a pretty easy software adjustment, I would think

  • Our team is currently in the process of reviewing your report gathered through Garmin Support, and I will update this post as we determine more information in our review of the concern.

Be sure to keep an eye out for correspondence from Garmin Support regarding your Autoshot concerns, and they will be in-touch to review your report once they have more info regarding what specifically is occurring.

In the meantime it is important to consider certain factors that may cause shots to not get detected by the Autoshot feature during golf rounds, that may not be a result of the Autoshot feature being broken...as there may be normal factors (that we outline extensively on our support site how to avoid) which may be leading to shots not recording during your rounds.

Autoshot is only designed to prompt the recording and measurement of full swing shots. Partial swings, rescue, chip shots, and putts...(which, by chance may occasionally get detected)...those shot types are not designed to be detected by the Autoshot feature. Any shots that are not full swing should be expected to not get detected or recorded through the Autoshot feature. Approach CT-10 sensors are required for all shots to automatically get detected, not just full the full swing shots.

I have also sent you a direct message here in forums providing some important additional information, which cannot be posted here on the public thread as it is specific to your account.

    Thank you,

  • Afternoon. Seven of 18 holes missed the autoshot drive completely today. Many of those holes started autoshot on the second shot of the hole. Many of the third shots just kept adding yardage to the second shot total rather than starting a new autoshot yardage for the third shot. In addition, today, the app did not have input for putts on the scorecard.

Unfortunately, the autoshot is basically unusable with the 17.18 beta software package on the fenix 8, in my opinion. The yardage numbers to the pin is accurate on the watch but, autoshot is just not working. Big disappointment for a $1k watch

  • A few days ago I shared your problem with the reliability of shot detection.

But when I changed the wristband from a nylon to a new leather wristband my problemen were completely solved. I didn’t expect this, but the wristband can have a significantly influence on the performance of the watch. The leather wrist band locks the watch very good by the friction of the leather on the skin, the nylon one didn’t  have the same grip and seems to  be the source of the problem with the reliability of shot detection.

I have been very critically to @Garmin-Cody in earlier posts, when he stated the problem was solved and I didn’t agree. But based on my recent expirience I think this is one of the parameters which influencers much more than anticipated.

  • I have the 4 Garmin watches - Garmin S70,Garmin Fenix 7, Garmin Enduro 3, and Garmin Fenix 8.

    - S70 misses no shots

    - Fenix 7 misses no shots

    - Fenix 8 51mm Amoled (15.33) misses some drives - 2 to 3 per round

    - Enduro 3 (15.33) misses a lot of drives...   Feels like around 50%.

I don't swing really fast but I hit the fairway 60-70% of the time.  My drive avg distance is around 220 yards.   The Fenix 8 and Enduro 3 only seems to miss the tee shots.   After that, the auto shot detection works with the irons.

  • Got the same issue with the Forerunner 970. Autoshot was working perfectly before. Now records nothing anymore.

  • The update containing the fix for Autoshot on the Forerunner 970 is still in the process of being developed. I have added your account to the ticket for the issue on the 970 and once the update containing the fix for your specific model is released, Garmin will email you advising the fix is available.

The Autoshot issue outlined on this thread has been released for the 15.33 hotfix that was made available for fenix 8 and we are working on getting fixes for the remaining products that still have the issue present.

Differences in software, hardware, and other factors have resulted in some certain models having the fix made available vs others, and we apologize for the inconvenience while we get the solution released for the 970.

To avoid confusion for users specifically reviewing comments for Autoshot in relation to the fenix 8, please continue any further Auotshot discussion on your specific model in a new post or on one of the related threads in the dedicated section of the Garmin Forums site for the 970 linked here: Sport & Fitness > Running/Multisport > Forerunner 970

    - Thank you

  • Yesterday, I played golf with 15.33 F/W and on hole # 2, it missed detecting the tee shot.   So I tried to take a couple of practice swings with the driver to see if it would register and it wouldn't.  I then took an iron and tried to hit the ground with a full swing to force it to register and I still wouldn't register the tee shot.    Then I looked closely at the watch and I noticed that the virtual caddie feature was spinning and hadn't figured out the optimal club to use.    I'm guessing that auto shot detection won't work if the virtual caddie is spinning.    It's going to rain today so I can't test but can somebody try with the virtual caddie feature set to manual and see if it still misses tees shots?

If my theory is correct, the bug is with the virtual caddie feature that can't figure out the optimal club and preventing auto shot detection.

  • Just finished 18 holes with the Fenix 8 on 15.33.   It captured all my tee shots.  Only difference is that I turned off the virtual caddie.   So it appears the bug is with the virtual caddie set to auto.  For some reason on some tee shots, it can't figure out the optimal club to use and keeps spinning.   When it's spinning, shot detection doesn't work.
