Curious what the the point is for extended display. I’d think just broadcasting the watch as a heart rate monitor would accomplish the same thing? Seems like when I use the 1050 as extended display, I lose a lot of functionality.

One of the most important use cases for extended display is traithlon, where you record your whole race with your watch, but on the bike leg, you also want to see the timing (and possibly other stats) on the edge without the need to start a separate activity.
Extended display will just show compatible fields on your watch. It's great for duathlon or triathlon events. You can still record standalone on the bike leg and see the fancy connectIQ data fields, but your watch still record the bike leg too. And then, just choose to discard the activity on the 1050 after.
