Navigation and mapping lags

Hello everyone,

When I use map and try to pan/zoom it toils forever to load new segments. I know this isn’t a phone but it’s still very annoying. I’ve used Fenix 7 before and didn’t notice as significant lag. I haven’t see any posts mentioning this and any reviewers haven’t complained absolutely this so I decided to ask you guys.

Another thing is navigation. It has been mentioned several times by now but I want to point it out as well. Garmin is the brand that makes dedicated navigation devices and yet navigation on my Fenix 8 sucks. Watch usually doesn’t reboot anymore while calculating a route, but 8 times out of 10 it fails or took forever to do so. It drives me crazy that one of the flagship features of this watch that really stands out from a competition doesn’t work. And it’s annoying that in previous generations it worked better than it works now. Garmin seems to not do anything about it. Navigation was broken from the beginning and still is an issue. Even gpx courses created by third party apps loads much longer than on Fenix 7 and there are a lot of bugs (elevation plots, climb pro, crazy distances or time to finish, total lack of course) too.

Are you having the same issues with navigation and mapping as I do?

  • Hi again,

I've been doing some hiking lately and realised another thing. Well actually two things - ETA/ETE and climb pro. Let's start from the ETA. I always use navigation when I'm hiking because it makes things much easier. Problem is - Estimated Time Arrival isn't working. It shows some crazy things. Look at the pictures. I have another 5 km or so, ETA is like in 10 minutes while ETA Next is more like 20 min? How can my destination be closer than my next waypoint/junction/whatever it shows me. ETA shows some crazy data, not realistic, I don't know why. Sometimes it work but 70% of the time it doesn't. On Garmin eTrex everything works great. And fast...

Which leads me to another thing. Climb Pro works soooo sloooow. When I change data field to climb pro it loads 2-3 seconds. Longer than map. And then when I have Climb Pro as my current data page and try to wake up the display (I'm not using AOD) it takes 2-3 seconds to wake. It waits until Climb Pro data loads...

I'll definitely let you know if I find more bugs.

    Regards,

  • Thanks Eggi, I’ll try another time without phone connection to check if that really is the case. Without connection with phone it should rely on built in maps and nothing more.
