Step counter/Activity tracker counts while driving

Seems to be a FAQ but how are people pausing or stopping the step counter/activity tracker on Fenix 8? I operate tractors most of the day and this morning while having been sat down for 90% of it I managed to pull in 11 thousand steps! Garmin support suggested Settings<Health & Wellness<Move IQ<OFF. And to toggle between on and off as necessary, but it didn’t stop or slow the counting at all. TIA

  • I get no steps whilst driving 90km/ 45mins each way to work.

  • The MoveIQ setting you mentioned, has no influence on Steps counting.

Bumpy roads and/or inefficient car suspension may indeed trigger some steps. Personally, I have no such problems, and even when driving all day long I get maximally a dozen or two of extra steps for 15h of driving. If your situation is worse, then you can start an activity suppressing the steps counting. There are many of them - there is a list at Why am I Not Gaining Steps During Certain Activities | Garmin Customer Support but the exact list differs from model to model. Diverse motorsport activities probably suppress the steps counting too (I did not test it), so it would be the best choice, but if not, then you could use either a copy of Indoor Cycling (lower consumption) or plain Cycling (recording also the GPS track), and then change it to Driving in Garmin Connect later, to avoid spoiling your cycling stats (and Cycling Segments along the road).
