Black or Silver

I previously had the Fenix 8 Sapphire version in silver and after a week I banged the watch against the door which caused a considerable scratch. I read somewhere that the black version scratches less quickly because of the double coating. Is this true? Because I doubt whether I will go for the silver again but if the black is less scratch resistant then I prefer the black..

Thank you.

  • What is the best choice, RVs or titanium? Which one scratches the least?

  • Il nero si graffia più difficilmente e se succede non si può fare nulla per rimediare , mentre l'argento si graffia più facilmente ma si può facilmente rimediare

  • I have been a black watch user (Forerunner) for years and went raw titanium this time of round for my first Fenix. yes, the silver/raw scratches pretty easily BUT it can be buffed out. I have some minor scuffs which I don't mind and I know I can polish them out if I wish.

from what I have read and heard from friends who have the black DLC: it's fairly scratch resistant but will likely wear over a couple of years and then you can't do anything about scratches as there is no way to polish them out or re-add coating.

in short, each are a compromise. I'm actually pretty happy with the raw finish and think the minor scuffs add some character (and I've only owned the watch for 2.5 months). YMMV

  • Hi Derek,

do you remove the 4 screws and the bezel to buffe it or do you polish it directly?

BTW is it possible to remove the orange grid on the right to try to remove the color without damaging the watch?

    Thanks

  • That's why I was thinking about stainless steel this time because it's easier to polish the metal. I also read on this forum that Sapphire glass is darker than Gorilla glass.

  • I would definitely leave this to the jeweler and not take any risks.

  • I had a really deep scratch in it with minimal contact with the door. Titanium on wood. And I had the watch for a week and it irritated me immensely. Mini scratches okay, but this was a really big deep scratch. I further researched on this forum I found out that titanium is lighter but also more vulnerable than stainless steel which is more scratch resistant but heavier.

  • Yes, you can remove the orange (or black depending on your watch) grid. You'll need a Torx T5 screwdriver. It's commonly used for building computers, so you or someone may already have one. If not, you can buy it from Amazon.

  • I have not done it myself but seen posts here and on Reddit. I believe the approaches to to put some tape on the screen and anything else you want protected and then gently use a titanium cleaning wand. I also have read about using a polishing clothes.

a noted by others, the guard is removable, but I won't remove mine until after my warranty is up. I've slowly gotten used to the orange. if I had the option to order it custom when I bought it with a natural guard, I would have done that (you can now)
