Fenix 8 Solar Ambient light sensor

Is there any auto brightness feature that uses the ambient light sensor? I want the backlight gesture to only turn on when it's dark.

  • I have one activity I do in the dark, and only because of this one I have the setting "light always on during activities" active, which sadly is a global setting and not possible per activity (resulting in wasting power on all my other outdoor daylight activities).

I don't use the wrist movement feature but have my light switch on by button press or touch, but in the end it does not matter how they would combine an ambient light detection with the back-light settings.

It's really sad Garmin is not offering that option.

  • The solar ring cannot act as a precise light sensor, they tried that on the 7 pro and it was awful.

The Epix 2 has perfect ambient light control, there's no reason why they couldn't have added this tech on the fenix 8 MIP. It should have been there already on the 7.

Instead of improving the watch they added borderless useless stuff like a microphone or speaker. Which I never used in the last 7 months even ONCE. A proper auto backlight is desperately needed, and each time I'm using an activity in the dark and get blinded by the 20% backlight, I get reminded that this is an  overpriced, flawed product which isn't even worth half its price.

    1. Of course it can, an the new 8 series solar is even supposed to be more sensitive
    2. They don't need to, the specs say it has a dedicated light sensor
    3. The 7 Pro also has a dedicated light sensor, they never tried to use the solar ring for this.
    4. MIP light adjustment works the opposite of an OLED adjustment, OLED needs to be brighter in brighter light, MIP needs to be off, so no there is a reason they can'T just add it as it is, it need to be re-coded (thats what they did with the 7 Pro and it was just dumb because they ported OLED brightness behavior to the MIP display).
  • The Fenix 8 MIP version does not have an ambient light sensor. Your best bet as another user suggested is to set it on gesture after sunset.

I tried that, but unfortunately new Sapphire display has less clarity than Fenix 6 or Forerunner 955, especially when you're indoor, so I guess that Garmin decided that it would be a safer to just fire up backlight every time no matter if it's dark or not.

  • Sorry, but that has no sense. Solar ring is able to deliver precise information to the watchface about the sun exact exposure. Middle developer should be able to code this measurement to discover whether there is enough light to skip backlight or to enable it.
