Garmin what's wrong with your ecosystem?! Fenix 8 and Edge 840

Tell me please what is the point of buying your different devices if they cannot cooperate with each other?!

Explain that please (if you possibly can...)
When I go cycling I have to use your both devices. Why?

If I use only Edge then after the ride my calories are not transfered/summed up correctly into Garmin Connect and what's more they are not displayed/summed up on the Fenix
If I use only Fenix then what is the point in buying Edge?! I want to see all the data clearly during riding, on a 'big' screen – not a small watch on my hand!
So finally the only sensible option is to ride with both devices and then at the end of the ride cancel the ride on Edge and save activity from Fenix.

Sorry but I find it totally ridiculus!
I guess you are lucky (for now) because there is not much choice on the market but I hope that it will change in the future. Then you will loose a lot of users.

I would be greateful for some explanations (if there are any) to the issues I described above.
Regards

  • Hi.

I use the same two devices and all activity data (including calories) are synced flawless between the Fenix and the Edge. Even the calories etc. from a Zwiftride (on my iPad) are synced and calculated into to the total calorie expenditure of the day on my Fenix (without tracking the indoor ride on the Fenix).

Maybe there is a problem with one of the devices not connected correctly to Garmin Connect or Garmin Express. Maybe try reconnect both devices to whatever app you are using and to your WLAN at home, which helps with the sync.

  • And may I ask how do you use them? Do you use only edge during Cycling (switch off the fenix) or use them both?

  • I only use the Edge for cycling outdoors and the Fenix for running, walking, SUP, etc.

When cycling, I have the Fenix stll on my wrist but it is not recording any activity. After the ride and before sync, I can see a few active calories on the Fenix, cause that is the nature of the watch. But after sync, they get updated with the data from the Edge.

I will try to make photos after my commute tomorrow from before and after sync.

  • But it will mess up your stress and body battery Wink

  • Whilst I would describe my experience as somewhat different from yours, the inability of edge and watch units to sync a simple metric like calories has been a subject of complaint for many years which Garmin chooses to ignore. Don't hold your breath!

  • I have a Fenix 8 and Edge 840. My Fenix 8 is used to track all of my health metrics (some of which aren't calculated on the Edge 840).

I use my Edge 840 as my HUD (Heads Up Display) because it is easy and safer to use than a watch while cycling. At the same time, I start I cycling activity on my Fenix 8. At the end my ride, I end the ride on my Fenix 8 and make sure that it syncs correctly with Garmin Connect (I have never had an issue). I then stop the ride on my Edge 840 and discard the ride.

The next time the Edge 840 syncs with Garmin Connect, the ride from that was synced from my Fenix 8 will be uploaded to the Edge 840 (in fact all activities not just cycling will be uploaded to Edge 840).

All of my health stats (HR, training readiness, intensity minutes etc) are accurately reported in Garmin Connect.

Unless you're a weight weenie and don't want to ride with your Fenix 8 and Edge 840, problem solved.

  • When I used a watch and an Edge, I used to record on both but not sync the Edge.

My biggest problem doing this was when doing structured workouts I would use the lap button on the Edge, and then not have the laps in the synced activity.

Garmin do make the Edge remote control, but never made it work with any watches (or they would have sold another).

Now I just handlebar mount my Fenix, and for me the pros far outweigh the cons.

Even with a 47mm (MIP/solar) it is very easy to see how low my power output is, and my Varia works just as well as an Edge.

If Garmin made both work together flawlessly I would own both and ride with just the Edge.  But instead we are getting ever higher device prices, lower software quality and subscriptions.
