restarting during course calculation

I purchased the Garmin Fenix 8 from you last week. I’ve been a loyal user of the Fenix series for the past 10 years without any issues. However, today I noticed a problem.

When I go to Run activity (this happens in all activities) -> Navigation -> Round-Trip Course -> I set the distance -> choose the direction, the watch starts calculating routes. However, just before the calculation finishes, or right after showing the first route, the watch restarts.

My firmware version is 13.35.
I’ve tried restarting the watch and syncing it with Garmin Connect, Garmin Express and Factory/Hard Reset, but nothing helped.

Interestingly, if I set a shorter distance (e.g. 3 km), the route is calculated and displayed without any problem. But if I use the default 8 km distance, the watch crashes and restarts.

Can you help me understand what might be causing this? Is Garmin already aware of this issue and working on a fix?

I also had this issue. I was halfway through a 22km trail run, I wanted my watch to generate a route home. It crashed. Took forever to get it to restart so I ended up running home with the watch off! Incredibly infuriating and feel I have lost a lot of faith in Garmin.

I reported same for MTB activity with loaded .gpx trace. It is constantly crashing during the activity avary 10-12 minutes. No help received.

Me too playing golf. My investigation point me out to corrupt map files. I just finished a hard reset (no using uploaded backup just in case) and re installing all maps. Crossing fingers that this works. Just in case, other uses also point to corrupt widgets from IQ Connect so you might want to avoid those until testing that the rest works.

Something similar happened to me today. I created a 28 km course in Garmin Connect and set up a PacePro plan. But when I selected it and was asked if I wanted to activate navigation, the watch restarted. It happened twice, so I ended up running without navigation.

I’ve used this feature before on shorter runs, and it worked fine with no issues.

Hi, same issue here! Have the issue since I updated the Fenix 8 to 13.38. This time it does not seem to be connected with the GPS.

Hopefully there will be a fix soon.

Yesterday, I got black screen on after select workout from training calendar from Garmin coach. This is insane, 1100€ watch one year from release, hase a lot of problems.
