Can you recommand switching to Fenix 8 ?

Hello Dear Fenix 8 owners!

Can you recommand switching to Fenix 8 from Fenix 7 Pro, for a enthusiast?

My F7Pro Sapphire Solar works pretty well, no issues.

Is that also the case for Fenix 8 right now?

I'm considering switching because I would love to have assistant, diving sensors and route recalculating.

But are those new features working as they sopose to do?

Is the microphone assistant working well? In german? has somebody experiance in using it in german?

Thanks alot for your feedback and experience exchange!

Cheers

Justice

  • If you are an enthusiast, the reasons you may want to switch:
-GPS distance accuracy is really improved.  If you do trail runs or rides, this makes a big difference.
-AMOLED is really nice.  I wish I could change the timeout and the custom watch faces time out in 8 seconds even if you have it set to 15.  But the AMOLED is very readable and nice.
    -GPS Aquisition is better.
-HR still isn't as good as Polar HR band but pretty good.  EKG is cool.
-Speaker is a surprisingly nice upgrade for notifications and alarms.  The phone thing is pretty nice if your phone is in your pack.  It's not super useful for general watch management.
-Interface can take a moment to adjust to it but is a nice interface.
-Battery life on the 51mm is really good.

  • The Fenix 8 I've found to be very buggy at the moment (praying for an updated firmware asap). I haven't found it to be a big upgrade from my Epix 2. If you want the latest then it's nice due to the screen and interface but as far as accuracy goes etc, I haven't seen a big difference although if you live somewhere that's usually difficult for GPS then you may see an improvement.

If fitness watches are your thing and you like having the latest then why not. :)

  • Hi there! Thanks for the feedback!

I assume your F8 is running the latest firmware V13.35? and it's still buggy?

  • Still many bugs and annoing ui. Devicelock is faulty, Touchscreen doesnt get back to work after sleepmode with touch disabled, Guidence Arrow in Navigation is displayd on the upper half of the screen during a course so you cant really see much of your path, if you dont use englisch as language information on some watchfaces are cut off......there are many reasons to not upgrade and you probably will not get any new features on your 1000$+ watch in the future if you not willing to pay extra on Garmins new subscription model.

  • From the way I use my Fenix 8, there is really only one bug (disable sleep mode) and is not a showstopper

The battery life on my 51mm solar has been outstanding.

FYI - There are many people who don't like new Garmin Subscription model for Garmin Connect (I get your dissatisfaction). Regardless of which watch you own the current feature set in the free version remains the same and Garmin has committed to keeping it free. If, you are concerned that Garmin won't keep their word, and you are unwilling to purchase the Garmin Subscription, you might want to wait as your current watch is more than adequate.

  • Current bugs that affect ME a lot:

Power profiles not respected (hey, flashback to the time it happened on the F7. Garmin doesn't ever seem to learn)
Focus mode display ON overrides per activity setting...
Sleep Mode watch face stays on if you have it enabled in Sleep Focus, even after ending sleep. Have to turn battery saver on and off again to go back to your watch face. Garmin Support's solution? 'Don't use it. '
Palm cover doesn't work reliably (when using raise to wake to wake screen). Garmin Support? 'You are the only one.'

Those are just the big ones I run into ALL the time.

I don't remember with previous Garmins, when running intervals, that the notification for upcoming pace, or any change in pace, takes so long to go away. I don't need it to cover everything for fking 8 or 10 seconds, however long it is. Imagine trying to see what's gong on on an amoled screen with a timeout. My first run with this thing I was swearing on the trails trying to get it to stop covering my map.

  • I’d rather wait for the next model. The processor is too slow, and the optical heart rate sensor is the same as before. The lag is so bad that it almost feels like the maps aren’t working. If you're not a diver, it's basically the same watch as before. And if you are, you’re probably using a different device anyway.

  • For route calculating? NO. Absolutely garbage, there are no routing options any longer (walking, hiking, mixed surface cycling, car, etc...) and there's no autozoom feature anymore. Garmin has ruined navigation with this device, there's also no navigate app anymore. 0/10.

  • The phone call quality is poor, so I have to use my phone instead. The voice commands are just a gimmick. It took me four months to figure out how to get turn-by-turn notifications with voice, and even then, it only works if you import a route from Garmin Connect. This could have been a great watch with a better processor.

  • Yea I forgot to mention, how absurdly slow map loading is. It somehow feels worse than the Epix Pro I had before. Even just trying to use the sunrise/sunset widget with the sun position on the map? It takes freaking 5!!! MINUTES to load the map..... When I run I am constantly waiting for the map to update on turns. When I want to scroll the map, half the time I scroll, it just jumps back to where I was, and this is not at some crazy high view, just 120m. And when it DOES scroll, for like 20 seconds, the map is just white blocks in between map sections. Terrible.
