inReach Loading... after recent updates

I came to use my inReach Messenger device at the weekend after not using it for a month.

The device connected fine to my phone and appeared to have connected to my watch, however it wouldn't load messages on the watch and was stuck on a loading screen.

I could press a button which skipped the loading screen and would still allow tracking start/stop, SOS and preset message options however the messages list never worked and had the same issue when I got home with all devices connected over the same wifi network.

Any suggestions to sort it out?

  • Hi there, I had exactly the same problem halfway up a Scottish gully on Tuesday while winter mountaineering. My inReach was attached to my pack, and I wanted to send a quick safety check-in in case things got dodgy. I just got that "loading" message, too. Great safety let-down.

To be fair, updating my watch, and rebooting it (hold the top right continuously through the safety alert until the watch shuts down, then restart) seemed to solve the "loading" freeze, but you still have to go out of the activity and find the inReach app to send a message.

Vent: Garmin's execution of inReach on the Fenix 8 is poor for a safety feature. As with every glitch I've found over the past three months, it seems they brought the watch to market far too early and have tried to make an AWU competitor rather than a robust outdoor tool.

  • I've got the same problem. Did you find a solution that is not remove/add the InReach every time?

  • No not as yet. I'm unable to message from my Fenix currently and have to use my mobile. This does work, however would be concerned that if I ever needed to use the SOS feature off my watch that it wouldn't work as intended and would have to potentially get my phone out of my bag while semi-conscious with broken bones! Sounds dramatic but I only have the device as peace of mind for that eventuality and would be nice to know it could be relied on if ever required!

  • Speaking from experience, your InReach device needs to be on your person at all times. Not in a pack or on a bicycle.

i had a friend who crashed his bike and broke vertebrae in his back. His InReach was on his bike 30 feet away so, he had to wait until someone found him.

The SOS should be accessible at all times.
