Palm on display, no reaction!?

Since the update to 13.31, I sometimes can't get out of the settings or the widget when I put my palm on the watch display. The watch does not respond. The display remains on and in the current menu. Even when I receive messages and put my palm on the display to get to the watch face, it doesn't work. But only sometimes, most of the time it works. This seems to be a new bug.
Do others also have this error? Restarting the watch has not helped.
Please fix the error.

  • Same thing. The easiest way to 'fix' this 'bug' that Garmin managed to put in the latest watch after it working no problem since touch on the Fenix became a thing...

is to simply swipe down to the glances from the watchface, and walla, it works immediately.

It's been reported here, I reported it to Garmin Support, no feedback as usual.

  • Make sure your palm is relatively flat when you put it on the display.  If it's curved/arched over the display, it won't work.

Mine works every time, as expected, as long as I do this, or use a more flat skin surface, such as your forearm.

  • lucky you, it definitely doesn't work every time for me. It works 'most' of the time, but not every time. Been using it for at least 2 years now, I know how to use the feature.

  • Yeah, I can reproduce what you're talking about, but only if I slightly curve/cup my palm (creating a concave surface) when I place it over the display.  If I intentionally flatten my palm, or use say the back of my forearm or hand, it works perfectly.

Maybe support would be interested in some logs, based on your testing?

  • dude, like I said, I know how this feature works. I try it, doesn't work. Swipe to glance, do it the exact same way, and it works. Other times, it doesn't work, give up. A minute later, it works. It's infuriating how Garmin manages to mess with things that worked fine for the previous gen of watches.

This bug will probably never get fixed because of how erratic it is and the amount of naysayers saying they don't have the issue... I know what covering the watch face with my palm means. No way the watch thinks it's not covered unless the sensor is broken.

Just found another way to 'wake up' the watch to remember it has this function, when the display refused to go off with the palm gesture, double-tapping the display while it's on also works. Bizarre.

  • Just did a full factory reset, first time I try, it doesn't work.

  • Saw this and I just tried with Touch Lock On, went to watch settings, palm the watch.  The screen went black.  I tried with Touch Lock off, swipe down to unlock, go to watch settings, palm the watch, the screen went black.  So it's working on mine.  I'm on 13.31.

  • Wait... what, a double-tap sleeps and returns to home, same as the palm (or any flat skin surface)?  Is this a 3rd party app function?

I just did a quick (palm) test, worked 14/15, and above you had mentioned it mostly works?

It probably doesn't matter, depending on how Garmin handles core system functions, but are you on a stock watch face?

Did you try contacting support?  They may want to collect some logs, if you can easily reproduce, or at least you're another person logging the issue...

  • I don't understand what there is to discuss here. I've had the watch since its release and know how it works. This bug has been there since the last update. Previously, this function worked every time without exception, no matter how I placed my palm. Take a look at the videos. Placing my palm on the watch doesn't work until I touch the watch with one finger, then the bug seems to be fixed and it works again. I use a stock watsch face.

  • Exactly. People saying "you are doing it wrong"... go fly a kite. Like it's that hard to cover a watch ffs.
