OHR is extremely inaccurate for the first 10 minutes [FIT FILE]

This keeps happening.
Super annoying but as you can see there is a huge difference between wrist HR and HRM pro for the first 10 minutes or so.

This is causing my suggested workouts to be off and has been happening from day 1.

Yes the watch strap is tight and secure using an ultrafit band.  Running 12.35 firmware.

Looks like they changed the behavior for the Source Switching toggle: previously you could toggle source switching if an external HRM has been paired, but now you can only toggle it if an external HRM is *currently connected*. I have turned wrist heart rate off if there is HRM present. Please fix the HR algorithm garmin devs. This is just silly.

edit: this is crazy I'm basically checking all of my past runs since getting the Fenix 8 and this has been happening for every run. Some runs much much worse.

  • Don't be that much offended that I suggested to you, MAN, to shave a small bit of your hair. I just told you that this is one of the issues why some sensors can struggle to read the proper data. Gen 5 sensors included.

I have never had this problem when running, I also run with HRM+ and when I compare wrist and strap data, they're always nearly identical. But that's not always the case when biking or inline skating. That's also why I bought HRM+, because OHR still has some limits.

    Be good Slight smile

  • Try to shave your hair under watch, your hair is quite dark and dense, that's something what OHR doesn't like.

Yeah this is something I've had to do as well. Movement of the watch over the hairs gets mistaken for blood flow at times which results in cadence lock. Fixed after shaving a little square patch Smile

The lighter watches like the Apple Watch and Forerunner series don't suffer as much as they tend not to bobble around due to their lighter weight.

As for the first 10 mins, it's likely due to your skin being cold before setting off. Happens to me in freezing conditions as well if I haven't warmed up. I've switched over to an HRM for winter as I love running cold.

  • Thank you guys for the input. I will obviously continue to use HRM pro but it is just sad to see.

  • it is well known that Apple Watch have the best OHR amongst all watches on the market. But there is also one thing, they don't give you every second data.

In workout, both apple and Garmin watches give every second data. When not in workout, neither give every second data to conserve the battery.

As for the first 10 mins, it's likely due to your skin being cold before setting off.

That could be one of the causes, but as shown during 2024 (since many users of range of Garmin watches have had this issue since some updates in 2024), that is obviously not the only cause of this particular issue. Usual replies last winter to that problem was the one you gave. But then spring and summer came, and that reply obviously was not applicable but same issue with HR inaccuracy kept repeating.

  • I just wanted to add my experience here, as I've been having the same 10-minute-ish slow start problem with three Garmin watches in a row (Epix 2, Epix 2 Pro, Fenix 8), to the point that I've developed a workaround of sorts.

Mind you, my main activity is swimming, I know about all the accuracy disclaimers and what not, I've tried both hands and different tightness, but the (mis)behaviour of the watch is just really really consistent. I start my swimming, and the heart rate just won't go up past a certain threshhold, until I have enough of a break between sets that it randomly manages to pick it up.

What I do now is, I purposefully stop after the first 10 minutes or so, with my watch hand firm and out of the water, and within 1-2 minutes you can just see the HR going up istantaneously. It behaves as if it throws away an HR increase as incorrect data while moving. I've had the same happening with running, albeit not every single time like swimming. Example of swimming below, stopping around 10 minutes to pick up the HR.

, feel free to look at my activities if you wish. I kinda gave up on this after three years, competition is fierce and already better for some aspects, at some point they will catch up with the needs of hardcore sports clients for whom Garmin is still a leader, and people will jump the ship.

  • I absolutely love love that we keep quoting the garmin devs like Laurie and Garmin - Cody without any response back whatsoever.

(Garmin-Cody) went as FAR as editing my OWN post and removed his name from the mention. He did this twice. In my First post and once I saw it removed I thought it was a mistake. Quoted him again later and he again, removed his name from my post.

Really mature responses from a known issue which I'm simply relaying onto these forums. What is wrong with you ??
I have again quoted him in this post. Watch how in a matter of hours (maybe minutes) his @ mention is removed. Perhaps this entire post?

edit: 2 hours past and his name is still here. Maybe the third time was a charm.

  • funny you mention the stop.

That's exactly what happened to the graph in my original post. After 10 minutes I stopped to see what was going on with the heart rate because I was running and would see the bpm stuck at 130 but knew in my mind my heart rate didn't feel like 130 so I stopped to check. As soon as I started the activity again you can see the agreement of both HRM PRO and OHR is instant.

    Nuts

  • Same here. And watch has it often wrong both ways. Very high heat rate during easy warm up. Or not picking up on high heat rate during short intervals(heart rate even going down). Is so annoying not being able to trust this very very expensive Sports watch. Wish I had my forerunner 945 back which was stable in the end.

  • When I walk in the gym, my heart rate is about 80. When I switch on "strength" it goes up to almost 160. While doing nothing more physically then before the button press. After about 10 minutes my heart-rate goes to normal levels. To me this is a pretty clear sign of a software problem, and not a sensor problem. Not exactly your issue, but I think it's related.

  • 7 days after still nothing from Garmin devs.
