Body Battery calculation does not include training sessions form Edge devices

Hi all,

I am just wondering why the Body Battery statistics show the gain and drain of each activity or nap that was recorded by the Fenix 8 watch but not a high intensity bike ride recorded with an Edge cycing device.
For example I can see that the light walk with my dog drained the battery by -2 but a bike ride over several hours with intervals which burned thousands of calories is not even mentioned there.
I would assume that all the information tracked by my registered Garmin devices get merged in Garmin Connect.

In case of importance I do have the Fenix 8 47 Amoled with SW 12.35 and an Edge 530.

  • It’s been a customer question for years.. There seems to be minimal product interaction when it’s Garmin! Really weird though, to not integrate such things people seem to expect at this point.

  • Neither Edge 530 nor any other Edge support the feature of Body Battery. You need to wear your primary wearable device (watch) supporting that feature in order to get BB values from the rides. It is the watch that measures the BB, not the head unit or the app.

  • That is really completely unexpected and stupid.
My primary sport is cycling and the only reason why I got the watch is to monitor the time off-bike to track recovery etc.
Also I need the Edge to be connected to power meter, heart rate sensor etc. because this device has a much better screen size on the bike.
I had no doubt about that the devices gather all information together and merge it in the Connect universe.
What a huge missed opportunity. Worried

  • I see no problem. Just go on recording the rides with Edge, while wearing the watch. If you want higher HR accuracy, you can pair the strap to the watch too, and record the activity on it simultaneously, discarding it at the end, instead of saving, to avoid the duplicate. Edge alone simply does not have the ability to calculate Body Battery.

  • Will give that a try, thanks!

  • I cycle too. I use an Edge 1030 Plus as my HUD and record the ride on my watch. At the end of the ride, I discard the ride that is on my edge. I use a heart rate strap paired to both my Edge and Watch, you should be able to connect the power meter to both the Edge and your watch simultaneously as well.

I prefer to keep all of my activities on one device which is why I discard the ride on my edge device. I might be mistaken but, the watch tracks training readiness rather than Garmin Connect.

  • Not exactly how I thought it should work but I will try.
Who knows, maybe even I get used to the Fenix display, get myself one of those watch mounts and sell the Edge.

  • IMO trying to navigate from a small screen watch face is hard and dangerous.

    i use my edge a a HUD.

An alternative is using your phone to navigate but, the battery drain on a long ride would be severe.

Another alternative is the Garmin Edge Explore 2. It doesn’t have the bells and whistles of the 530 but, it’s cheaper.

  • I use the same setup. My Edge is not connected to wifi or my phone. I record all rides on my Fenix and the Edge, if one fails I have the other record. Mostly I keep the Fenix copy. If I need the Edge record, I delete all rides except the one I want and then Sync via usb cable. Has worked well for many years.

  • Guess you don't have to handle it that thoroughly.
I ran a training now just recording on both devices and in the end I chose save on the Fenix and discard on the Edge.
Worked fine, thanks for the workaround.
Only thing I am not happy about is that I went with the 47mm version with the main thought of not needing the extra battery life for my long rides as I planned to only record them with the Edge.
A 1,5h ride just drained the battery already by 15%.

But if the Body Battery is the only metric that gets broken when I only use the Edge, I might return to single recording on the Egde. Vo2Max, Recovery Time etc. seems to work fine even when you only use the Edge to track your training.
