Can’t seem to calibrate Fenix 8 buttons using the file

Hi everyone and hope you are all having a merry Christmas.

I’ve been trying to calibrate the buttons and have not have much luck with having the key calibration file work on my Fenix 8 as per the instructions in previous threads. I’m on Mac and after creating the file inside the watch through connecting it to my computer, and disconnecting it, no key calibration popup occurs prompting me to press the buttons.

  • What program are you using to access the watch file structure? Where are you placing the file on the watch?

  • Do you have a link to thread/instructions on how to do this?  Why did you calibrate, were they so far off the buttons were unusable?

  • My Fenix 8 51 solar was with that problem and now shut down and won't start again.....

  • My was with that problem and now it stopped working at all. It won't start.

  • I had to use this hack, too, because my down button was not working correctly. I had to try multiple times, but eventually it worked.

I think we all agree that a $1000+ watch should come calibrated (=properly working) to start with. We shouldn't have to calibrate it like a 1990 PalmPilot...

And if for any reason, button calibration is needed, we shouldn't have to download some third party tool to transfer an empty file to our watch. If calibration is really needed, there should just be a menu item for this.

I posted this on the official garmin fenix 8 thread. It is the full instructions with some comments I added. IT WORKS:

Garmin provided me the following which fixed my issues:

The buttons did change on this watch due to the dive abilities of this watch, so they might take some getting used to. There is a calibration. The following steps will allow you to calibrate the buttons of your watch and possibly resolve the button issue you are experiencing.

    1. Plug your watch into a Windows PC or a Mac that has the ability to read MTP devices (a third party program may be needed for your Mac to see the watch as a drive).
    1. Locate the drive for your watch on the computer, and open the drive.
    1. Place the KEY_CALIBRATION.BIN file in the Internal Storage of your watch. It should not be placed in a subfolder.

    SEE "CLARIFICATIONS" BELOW

    1. Disconnect your watch from the computer.

The watch will go to a button calibration screen. Press each button fully a couple times. A green check will appear when the button is calibrated. After calibration has completed, turn off touch on your watch, and test the buttons to ensure they are working. If the buttons are still not working, let us know.

    CLARIFICATIONS:

As for KEY_CALIBRATION.BIN it took a week for someone here to 'splain this to me. You need to create it yourself. Open a plain text editor like Notepad in Windows. Create a New file. leave it Empty. Save it as KEY_CALIBRATION.BIN. For File Type I picked *.*

Then go back to Step 3 and copy it where stated. Unplug and walla! Your Screen will appear with five Red checks. Push the corresponding button to each. Each of mine flipped to green with one press on each.
