Maps loading slowly

Has anyone had any issues loading maps, I have topo uk i use for a driving app today and despite loading initially, which took ages, it kept recalculating and going blank before loading, unusable killed battery as well

On my old watch you could switch off maps not being used which made it faster  but I could not find that option

  • In crowded city map with lots of POIs it takes more time to render.

I think it is a silly idea that people would pick a POI on the watch to navigate to it. Does anyone ever do that? I think in 5 years of owning Fenix 6 and Fenix 7 I've only done that once. Navigation on this watch was created by the same team that worked on handheld navigators and that shows.

I think the right solution is to use a phone to search for and pick a point, then instantly transfer that to the watch, then stash the phone and navigate on the watch. When travelling outdoors phone should be carried anyway for safety. And in a city environment, as you said, there are so many POIs and other details that the map simply chokes and becomes super sluggish.

  • Agreed. Isn't that Garmin has developed the Garmin Explore App?

  • Exactly, not for everyone.
Sometimes, I kinda use it a lot. It's better than taking out my phone from backpack and try to transfer during a run. Not only for searching some unknown area, but also other things like to understand how much distance and time I have to reach a point before the sunset etc. Also I'm not sure phone connection syncs courses or points during an activity. I think some of the traffic is stalled while activity is on.
I keep it in detailed mode, so that if I can't see a point on map, I can take out my phone and add it do the map.
