Hello, I wanted to share my experience on 2 topics:
- updating Garmin TopoActive maps with latest versions
- turn-by-turn navigation with audio alerts.
TopoActive maps update
This week I updated the TopoActive v2024.20 maps (an update popped up in Garmin Express), still being on fw12.22.
Surprisingly after this update, no third-party map layer seems to work anymore. Even though the layer (MapRando, Flikart, OpenTopoMap, etc.) is activated on a TopActive map base, only the TopoActive map is visible, no third party map layer is visible. And of course before this update, this was not the case. So the only way to bring back the MapRando 3rd party map for instance is to select the "CityNavigator" map instead of TopoActive. Back to September 2024 behavior... Anyway, it frustated me enough and I decided to stick with TopoActive. and there the good surprise...
Turn-by-turn audio alerts
This morning, without much conviction, I start my running training, I choose my predefined route, I activate navigation alerts for this route hoping that an alignment of planets will make this function work. Knowing that on my last 5 training sessions, my watch remained as silent as a brick concerning voice guidance , I had no hope at all.
I start my training and after 100m, I almost fainted when I heard "in 50m, turn left" in the middle of my Audiobook! These long awaited navigation alerts started working! And it even held up throughout my entire run without any failure!
I don't know if it's because I deleted my 3rd party layer, if it's the TopoActive maps update or the 12.35 firmware but anyway, it works!
Conclusion: I don't touch anything anymore and hope any future update won't mess with that.
