Fenix 8 51mm MIP Solar First Swim Disaster

I had the Fenix 7x Solar for 3 years and did hundreds of pool swims with no problems other than the occasional length count problem where it occasionally added an extra pool length to a multiple lap interval.

I just got the Fenix 8 51mm sapphire solar (MIP) two days ago and did my first swim today in a 25-meter pool.  I set the pool length to 25 meters and did my first interval off 100 meters.  The distance registered 1960 meters vs 100 meters.  I deleted the event and did another lap, and the distance was 20 times higher than the 100 meters.   I deleted that activity and started again.  The distance again registered some absurdly high distance number.

I deleted that activity for the third time and went into the system and changed sports, and the watch crashed, and I got the Blue Triangle of Death. No amount of button pushing would turn the watch back on.

When I got home, I plugged the crashed watch with the Blue Triangle into the charger, and it immediately kicked back on.  It was at 60% charge level and needed no charge, but connecting it broke through the crash.

Am I going to have to throw this new Fenix 8 watch into the garbage and use my old Fenix 7x sapphire solar to swim my laps and intervals?
