Garmin 8 MIP vs AMOLED

I received my Garmin Fenix 8 51mm watch yesterday from Garmin and immediately noticed they shipped me the MIP Solar version vs the AMOLED that I thought I ordered.   I almost returned it immediately.  However, I wore it last night to an indoor concert and while sleeping.  I had the Fenix 7X Sapphire Solar for the past 3 years and loved it.

I was looking forward to the beautiful new high-res AMOLED screen, but got to thinking that it would blast my eyeballs out at night, not be as good hiking in bright sunlight or during nighttime activities like sleeping and in dark rooms where the AMOLED screen lights up like a phone.

I may keep this MIP version of the Garmin Fenix 8 51mm.

Any comments from MIP users who switched to AMOLED on the Garmin 8?

  • If you decide to keep it make sure Garmin credits you back the difference in price.

  • I switched from Tactix 7 Pro to Fenix 8 AMOLED 51mm. Many here in this forum will tell you that it's not bright enough in the dark!

Actually, it has an ambient light sensor of some kind, and it takes some time to brighten up. Within the first second of the screen coming on, it's really nice and dim, and won't blast your eyeballs out any more than the MIP with backlight at 50%. It does brighten up nice and gradually over the next 1-2s and is quite nice.

The key for me is the colours, it's much richer and deeper. And for some reason, without the Always-On-Display, it actually gets better battery life than my T7Pro! F8AMOLED - 1% per 3hrs. T7Pro - 1% per hour. (Yes, I know it's dependent on your settings etc, but this is my real life battery consumption with similar settings on both watches.)

    Hope this helps your decision!

  • I switched from Fenix 7X to Fenix 8 AMOLED...and after two weeks I sold the AMOLED and switched back to Fenix 8 Solar (51mm).

The MIP Screen is better for how I use a watch.

  • Hi, for my part I went from the Fenix 7X Pro 51mm to the Epix Pro 51mm, then I went back to the Fenix 7x Pro 51mm. And now I'm at the Fenix 8 Solar 51mm.

  • Thanks, I have been wearing the MIP version of the Fenix 8 51mm for 2 days now and like it, but I'm wondering what I'm missing vs the AMOLED version.  I'm thinking I will stick with this MIP version.  I have to decide fast because I don't want to "one of those guys" on returns.

  • Unfortunately I was not as lucky as you I ordered the 47 mm AMOLED Version of the watch I wish I would have ordered the MIP version. Now I know and I still would prefer the MIP version, before I recharge the watch every second week Fenix 7x Pro 51mm, now I have to charge it every 4 days, considering one or two hours of GPS time a day. Mostly I'm bothered by the fact that if you don't turn your hand properly it's not turning on for example I'm making a bowl of tea while holding the tea I want to start the timer and the watch turns itself off as it's in the downward position where it usually would consider to be turned off this really has become a huge issue for me, as well in similar situations. I don't have any wow effect for the AMOLED. It is more disadvantage den advantage. It fore sure is difficult when you consider and don't see it on your wrist but please stick with MIP if you ready have doubts

  • I'm a fan of MIP displays and that's why I love Garmin. Previously, I had an F6 sapphire and F7 sapphire solar this screen was very bad and dim because of the sapphire and the thin solar panel. But now I have an F8 47 mm Solar and I will say the F8 MIP screen has become just great. It became black, contrasting, without this purple glare. I think at F8 this is the best Mip generation. Amoled annoys me and for the appropriate autonomy, you need makes an annoying gesture to look at the time... Information is always on screen! Mip is better for me!!

  • I've had the Fenix 7X Pro Solar and now own the Fenix 8 51 mm, and honestly, I love it. The details on the data pages are awesome. There are pros and cons to both models.

  • Abraham, you have the MIP version of the Fenix 8 right?  You just said Fenix 8 51 mm, and I assume since you said that you love the details, that means you have the AMOLED screen.  So having had both, you prefer the AMOLED?  Does it bother you when it lights up like a phone at night?

  • For me mip is much better.

Fenix/epix is not a smartwatch it is sportwatch with some smart features. That is why amoled i useless, always on drains alot of battery, charging often lowers watch lifespan.

Of course garmin loves amoled, they have higher prices and lower lifespan because you charge the watch often when you have aod in.

Always on outdoor is to dark to see, you still need to turn the screen on fully to see the time or if you are in a activity.

Better colors? For what? To see the time?
