Is ECG on Garmin watches just a novelty? Manual only?

Hi Guys. Getting a Fenix 8 soon and it has ECG. Two questions:

1. Is it just a one time manual reading? Does it (or can it) measure through the day/night automatically? If not, it might not be worth it to even try as then you are locked into using MFA with your Garmin acct even if you use ECG test once and never again. Can't undo MFA if you don't ever use it afterwards.

2. Is ECG just a novelty/gimmick? I feel like I'd try maybe 1 or 3 times and then forget about it.

  • It cannot measure automatically, as you will have to place your fingers on the watch to start and receive proper measurement.

In my humble opinion, it doesn't worth the nerves. I used it once or twice, didn't saw any real value in it, hence I removed the app and unfortunately couldn't revert to non-MFA account even through their support...

  • Can't undo MFA if you don't ever use it afterwards.

Just setup an alternate Connect account to see how you like the feature then decide if you want to add 2FA to your main account

  • Can't undo MFA if you don't ever use it afterwards.

You only need 2FA if you intend to look at the results in GCM. If you don't you can test ECG and just look at the results on the watch.

    Is ECG just a novelty/gimmick?

As usual it depends on personal perspective. For the few with possible Afib it could be of some value - bearing in mind the results would need to be verified by a cardiologist. For most I think it's just there because people a vociferous minority shouted and screamed that other watches had it and Garmin didn't.
