Friendly bluetooth sensor names -- not XX + shortened MAC address

Is it possible to have my Fenix 8 automatically pick up the advertised name, or model number, or serial number of a bluetooth sensor? I know you can change the name manually, but the information is already in the message from the bluetooth sensor.

Can the Fenix8 use the sensors bluetooth advertising data to define the name? A Polar H10, for example, comes up on my Fenix as "HR-xx.xx.xx.xx.xx where the xx are a shortened MAC address.

I know that the H10 advertises its uuid/function as 0x180d (bluetooth heart rate service), model (H10), serial number, plus more. Is is possible to have the Fenix read "HR-H10-yyyy", where yyyy is the serial number. No manual entry required and each one is unique.

I know my earbuds already almost do this--Jabra active elite8 and soundcore Sport X10, although I'm not sure they are unique since I only have one of each.

Thanks for listening.

  • Currently, the Garmin Fenix 8 does not natively support automatically extracting and displaying the unique serial number or model name from Bluetooth sensors like the Polar H10. It typically relies on a simpler identifier from the Bluetooth advertising data, which is often the shortened MAC address or a generic name like "HR-xx.xx.xx.xx.xx" for heart rate monitors.

Bluetooth advertising data includes several fields like device name, service UUIDs, and sometimes more detailed information like model numbers or serial numbers, but most Garmin devices, including the Fenix 8, typically only parse the basic Bluetooth name and services for display. This could explain why you're seeing the shortened MAC address in your case.
