Heart Rate Zones Based on LTHR - After new LTHR or NEW Max HR detection

Hey there Slight smile

Have a question regarding Heart rate zones and Automatic detections.

First off my heart rate Zones based on LTHR was last zone 100%+

so if the watch detects a new measurement like Max hr or LTHR those zones switch to 99-114% etc ...

is it best to tap on "Reset" zones after a new measurement is detected or just let the watch do its thing and leave it how it is automatically configured ?

Hope someone understands what i mean :D

  • Hey. HRmax heart rate zones are not the same as Lactate Threshold. Note that the threshold where we enter anaerobic is much lower than maximal heart rate, so values above 100% are normal. Setting the highest zone as 100% will mean that the anaerobic zone is actually your threshold, and it does not necessarily use glycogen. It's simpler. There is a concept of LTH1 and LTH2. The first is aerobic (between aerobic and threshold), the second is anaerobic (above threshold and before VO2max). Lactate threshold is not anaerobic, but as a rule (excluding elite 10K runners and almost all good 5K and shorter runners), the transition from running at a conversational pace to a race pace. But it still does not have to mean running like a corpse. Above zone 5 is running like a corpse.

  • I reported the same issue in Fenix 7 forum about 2 years ago.

You'd think that detecting a new Max HR should not affect LTHR% based zones - those are configured relative to LTHR and should be changed only when a new LTHR is detected. But Garmin seems to think otherwise.

And to address the original question, with LTHR zones the bottom of zone 5 (top of zone 4) should be at 100% of LTHR, so the top of zone 5 should be somewhere above 100% of LTHR - anywhere between 108% and 115%. The advantage of LTHR% zones is that knowing your Max HR should not be needed.
