Experiencing many, many bugs with F8 related to HR

Been a long time Garmin user (5 devices since 2018) so I knew what I was getting into on a new release but wow, this particular round, the software is really bad.

The ones I'm experiencing and might be a dealbreaker are related to HR;

  1. is it's not logging any HRV or sleep. It will record continuous HR and show stress but every morning, HRV and Sleep Score are blank.
  2. Broadcast HR is barely working (meaning it takes forever to show up on Edge computer - if it all)

The fact that HR is working in some areas but not others lets me think it's SW vs HW and that's my biggest complaint. The SW on the F8 is really buggy. I came from a F7 Pro that has the same SOC and HR sensor and was super solid.

The poor SW updates seem to have crossed over to other products now. My Edge 840 yesterday didn't record a ride (first time ever in 6 years of using an Edge device).

  • (small edit based on what I'm observing)

for item 1 above - Sleep focus does not have any HR settings but seems to be mirroring Battery Saver and in the new SW, battery saver’s HR setting is to turn off (vs ‘don’t change’). This is different than what it did on the F7 and makes no sense when sleep is one of the times you want HR. I toggled it, worked for a couple days and now, Connect SW has quit logging again. (HR setting didn't change with any of the recent SW pushes)

for item 2 - it was not connecting with ANT so when I switched to BTLE, it connected right away. In subsequent rounds it was not connecting on BTLE either (timing out). The only solution I found is remove and repair the sensor every time which then takes 5+ minutes to be found on the Edge. My F7 always showed up instantly.

  • figured out that Sleep focus goes into Battery Saver and in the new SW, battery saver’s HR setting is to turn off (vs ‘don’t change’). This is different than what it did on the F7

No. It’s been a ‘standard’ setting for ages. I’d missed that Sleep Focus automatically picked up Battery Saver. In the past the user had to enable Battery Saver during Sleep. Perhaps it’s time Garmin changed the default setting in Battery Saver for Heart Rate to On?

  • (updated based on what I'm observing)

gotcha. I guess that's the thing, I check the watch after sleep focus comes on and it says Battery Saver disabled. But the behavior is similar to what the settings in Battery Saver were. Coincidence, maybe. The default HR setting on Battery Saver is to turn off.  I had to turn HR default back "on" (options are off or don't change - I made it 'don't change') and it worked for a couple days.

I then did the 11.67 & 11.68 updates and now it's not logging again - even though all the sleep and battery saver settings remained how I set them. I see the LED's flashing at night and regular HR and stress continue to log, so IMO it's a SW related bug somewhere else.

  • My HRV and sleep metrics are off the charts. I used Fenix 6 for several years. This fenix 8 thinks that I don’t sleep and my HRV is down the drain. I compared the results over 3 weeks with fenix 6 so it wasn’t just a few nights.
fenix 8 heart rate / stress / HRV / sleep metrics are off

  • You can try disabling battery saver during sleep (mine is off and was always off). But it's hidden (IMO, this is a bug, it should be in sleep focus menu).

Somebody mentioned this with Enduro 3 and it's the same on F8. Go to Sleep widget, press the middle (Menu) button, go to Settings and it's there at the bottom. See if that helps. My HRV and Sleep are getting logged properly.

  • Good idea checking via the widget. My settings there, Battery Saver is disabled.

Coincidentally, it recorded sleep and HRV last night after two nights of failing to do so.

  • found another HR related issue while troubleshooting #2 above - if you select 'Broadcast HR' from the watch settings in Connect (when its synched to your phone and you can edit some settings ) - the watch crashes and reboots.

I think I saw someone else post this, so still not fixed.

Also tested my F7 on this and it gets picked up right away as a source on the Edge and a friend's Wahoo Bolt v2.

Broadcast HR seems to have some real issues.
