Fenix 8 Topoactive map not downloading

I have followed the manual for downloading topo maps via the map manager, queued it and it started downloading last night.

This morning it hadn't downloaded. Tried turning the watch off and on.

It then told me to download it again. This is through WiFi.

Does anyone know how to fix this as I'm on a non signposted race in 2 days and the default map only has major roads.

Thanks

  • If possible, I would try to download the map via Garmin Express/Computer. Depending on how big the map is, it can take hours via the Map Manager and if there a problem occurs during download, you may recognize it only hours later, if you don’t observe the download process.

  • Surfacing a reply that solved this without using a PC. After adding a WiFi network to your watch, restart your watch. After that, the updates and options to download new maps appeared. Thanks all.

  • I have had the same problem and have tried everything. I was chatting with Garmin. Did a hard reset of watch. Deleted it from the app on phone and Garmin Express, rebooted it, it was still only trying to download via wifi on the watch and would not connect to computer's Garmin Express to take maps. I'm beyond frustrated. I had bought the watch right before I went to go hike in the alps and was trying to download the Europe topo on wifi and never got any map at all. In the end, my hike was snowed out the other week. But in that process, I have no maps at all on my watch. I'm so annoyed. I bought a Garmin watch for the map.

I was given two fact sheets, one on managing maps on Garmin Devices and another on hard resets and restoring a backup. The map one is ludicrously unhelpful.

I am going to try again today with the person over chat. At this point, I wish I could overnight my watch to Garmin, have them put the maps on it, and then overnight it back to me. For this much money on a device to have these issues and poor information is super irritating.

  • So janky.

    1. Plug Fenix 8 into power
    2. Queue map
    3. Sync with Garmin Connect
    4. Delete Wifi network on watch
    5. Force reset by holding light down on watch
    6. Checking maps… eventually shows and sometimes does or doesn't download the map on wi-fi even though the network was deleted on the watch. Might have to wait a minute or two.
  • I had the same problem. I solved it by turning OFF the passcode function,as soon as I connected the watch to power source it began downloading.

  • Just plugged watch into power and it started to download maps in a sec, thank you.
