Fenix 8 vs Epix 2 ULTRA comparison

Hi guys, last weekend had opprtunity to test both during Julian Alps Trail ultramarathon. One is my track witch Epix 2, second one is my friend with Fenix 8.

Main conclusion for the moment: Fenix 8 still needs lots of software improvements to reach Epix functionality during races. The rest is inside:

Epix2 track: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/17097721662  24:32, battery drain circa 60% (1 year old, 4-5 activities per week)

Fenix8 track: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/17097746487 20:19, battery drain circa 35% (first ever usage, so the battery is new)

Check the altitude difference: Epix is 4894, Fenix 5200 - official track was circa 4860 so Epix is more right.

  • The data you posted is very interesting. Idle times between the two devices are different especially towards. Is there a difference in the settings that would cause this? This difference it idle time could explain some other differences. With regards to the difference in elevation, were you using SATIQ with both devices?

  • Both watches are mine and configured as same as i could. Just 1 hour beofre the start i installed some update (dont know what it was). Idle time difference is caused by my stomach issues :)  SATIQ on.

  • That was quiet an effort for sure. It seemed as though the Fenix 8 recorded more idle time than the other device which could explain some of the variances you are seeing (that's not to say the Fenix 8 is right but, it could help determine where an software fix is in order).

  • Thanks for info. That difference in elevation is unacceptable.

  • Run with Epix and Fenix8
Turn on "Elev Corrections" on Epix
Cry how Fenix 8 su x
Epix has a 15% larger measurement error
    Superduper xDD

no profit   / brak profitu :D

  • Info: You have ELEVATION CORRECTION enabled on your Epix activity, but not on your Fenix 8 activity. To ensure an accurate comparison, disable elevation correction on both devices and then run the comparison again.

  • Guys - please read first post again:

I did it with friend, he finished in 20 hours, mine result is 24. I tried to set both watches to same settings same as possible, Fenix 8 still has some functionalites blocked or not working, its a piece of crrap right now. You cant even choose the maps you want to, its blocked.

Elevation corection is blocked as well in Fenix 8. It has all the issues described in other topics.

  • Hi chrabcio,

You're mistaken - it's not about people needing to read your post more carefully, but rather that your comparison is flawed, and therefore the data isn't meaningful. It seems you're unaware that both watches have a barometric altimeter, and the claims you're making based on a flawed comparison setup because of differing settings simply aren't accurate.

    1. Elevation Correction can also be enabled for tracks recorded with the Fenix 8. This is a Garmin Connect feature, calculated on their servers based on a stored elevation model, not directly from the watch.

    2. Besides, on watches with a barometric altimeter, Elevation Correction should not be enabled in Garmin Connect, as it often introduces inaccuracies, especially in mountainous terrain. The underlying elevation database isn't detailed enough, which often results in incorrect values.

    3. My original intention was simply to inform you that you can't compare two activities with different Elevation Correction settings. To compare the watches properly, Elevation Correction must be disabled on both activities.

Anyway, I've provided this detailed explanation for the benefit of other readers, so no one is misled into thinking that the Fenix 8 records bogus elevation data based on your false information.

P.S.: Congratulations on finishing the UTMB – an amazing achievement!!
