Fenix 8 software flaws is troublesome.....

I was really looking forward to get the Fenix 8 amoled, but I am really concerned about all the problems with the software. This is the main reason to why I have held off buying the watch and I would not be surprised if more people are thinking the same. Furthermore, how can Garmin even consider releasing the watch when the software obviously is so far from being finished?

  • This is normal for Garmin, and lots of people are willing to get it early despite knowing that it's buggy. Of course you're more than welcome to wait a few months for things to settle down, nobody will get mad at you. Or you can buy it now and the updates will come. It's completely your choice.

  • Most people dont have any issues at all, but they are not the ones to yell up about it. However these kinds of issues are common on every release and will get fixed. Get your f8 you will enjoy it.

  • This used to be normal for Garmin, but in the last few years, they seemed to have stabilized their software somehow. Unfortunately, the fact is that Fenix 8, with moving to the new platform, as of now seems like alpha software at the best. To say the situation is annoying would be an understatement of the century. Garmin obviously doesn't have Q&A at all, because even very incompetent Q&A would catch 90% of the bugs that exist right now.

That said, it's still a great watch and once you learn to avoid actions that make it outright crash (changing map layers, swiping away all the notifications), it's generally pretty usable. Even alpha software is workable in non-critical applications when you know its weak spots. Your options really basically are:

    • buy the alpha release of the product now. Spend more time than usual testing it, figuring out what not to do and what functionality not to use, and if you're smart about it, 80% of the time, you'll be fine.
    • Wait a few months. Garmin will probably fix most of the outright bugs
    • Wait a year or so. Once they release the next gen Pro version, it should be pretty darn stable.
    • Look for the company that treats their users as more than alpha testers. But this is complicated for most of us around here thanks to the fact how married we are to Garmin ecosystem. Sadly, given Garmin's utter lack of communication about Fenix 8 situation, this might be the ideal solution for people who are looking for their first watch.

  • I come from an Epix Pro and dispite the bugs I'm very happy with my F8. And I have reported a bunch of them.
It was the same story with the Fenix 6 and I have kept it 3 years !

  • Hey Nemo... I am going to be totally un-woke and agree with you. These people need to get a life:) They are absolutely within their rights to purchase an alternative product.

  • Sorry, or get a good shrink!!!

  • Final comment, I am over the moon with my 5 Fenix 8's , obviously donated some to family and friends.

  • Thanks i'm a bit computer illiterate, maybe heading to be banned from the forum:) But will take that forward. Age is the issue!

  • no crash ? navigation turn by turn ? routable feature that function ? eta that function ?

sorry, if you really use the watch for it's intended purpose, you have those problems. They affect everyone as those features aren't there.

Indeed, if you use it sparsely, without navigation, that's okayis, but in this case, why have a fenix 8... navigation is the core feature.
