Fenix 8 - Slow Route Calculation During Navigation

I’m using a Fenix 8 AMOLED 47mm with the latest firmware (11.64), and I’m consistently experiencing very long route calculation times when using the navigation feature with routing enabled. The calculation stays at 0% for over 2 minutes before finally providing turn-by-turn directions.

I’ve already tried a factory reset and reinstalled everything from scratch, but the issue persists — the route calculation consistently takes more than 2 minutes. I always wait until the GPS signal is fully acquired before starting the navigation.

For comparison, my Fenix 6S calculates the route in under 30 seconds without any issues.

Is this a known software issue on the Fenix 8, or could my device be faulty?

  • Ha! Fenix 8 is super fast compared to F7. F8 calculates route 10 mile away in maybe 2-3 minutes. F7 would just give up and said error. This is major improvement.

  • Thanks for the response! However, in my case, the issue isn’t just for long distances. Even when I try to calculate a route to a destination as close as 500 meters away, the calculation still takes over 2 minutes every time. This happens consistently, which doesn’t seem like normal behavior.

Given that the Fenix 6S completes the same task in under 30 seconds, I suspect something might be off with the performance on my Fenix 8. Could this be a software issue rather than an improvement in routing speed?

  • GPS lock has definately taken longer since 11.64 update.......

  • When I mention the calculation taking more than 2 minutes, I’m referring to the time after the GPS has locked in, not before. Additionally, I’ve noticed that the progress bar starts at 0%, stays there for a long time, and then jumps straight to 80% before completing. It never increments through 20%, 30%, 40%, etc., which seems unusual.

  • Default map after a factory reset : TopoActive

  • I have the same issue.
Long calculation and many errors. Especially in the cities.
    I use Talky Toaster map.
My Epix Pro was much more reliable.

So I have decided to use only Direct Routing and the calculation is immediate.
It works for me especially as I use Garmin Explorer or Apple Maps to enter waypoints.
It is fast and reliable and easy to us to find my way in unknown territory.

So you device is not faulty.

  • Same here. This really sucks. I am using the sendpoints app to save some destination but when it comes to navigate to them I get the same thing. However, there is a hack. Apparently, routing is causing this major calculation time. If you set Routing to OFF and shows you a straight line it loads up instantly. For me this is a good enough workaround as I don't really need turn by turn. Hope it helps. And hope that Garmin takes things more seriously considering the hefty price-tag.

  • Hi,

I know this post is quite old… but nothing has changed over the last couple of months. New features, new software, new bugs and still the same old route calculation. My friends and relatives have some Fenix 7/7 Pro and route calculation is almost immediate. Why does it take sooo long on Fenix 8? It’s the same chipset, same SoC, same memory - even functionality and maps are very similar. I believe that’s due to different way F8 treats maps and routes (you can see it clearly when importing a course or gpx file from Garmin Explore) or maybe maps themselves have more data - I don’t know. I just want my routable navigation to work as it’s one of the distinguishing features of this watch.

  • Slow route calculation during navigation is occurring for all Fenix 8 watch users. The problem appeared in firmware 15.32.
