Italy topoActive Map download issues

Hi All,

Loving my Fenix 8, worth the upgrade for me.

I'm travelling from Canada to Italy in a week and was hoping to add the TopoActive Europe map to the watch for my travels. I've used Garmin Express Map Manager but on the watch, the map still shows as "queued".

When I plug the watch into power one of two things happen:

- at work, the watch connects to WiFi but the download of the map seems stuck at 28% for ever

- at home, the watch continually searches for WiFi. I've removed the network and re-added....no change.

Any suggestions on how to solve these issues?

You can also connect the Fenix 8 to your PC and use Garmin Express to install the Topo Active maps. The Europe map is quite large (several GBs) and the Wi-Fi download on the watch itself is quite slow so installing from the watch's Map Manager takes a long time and is not always reliable.

I would also recommend downloading the maps via Express and computer. That's about up to 11 GB (for full Europe map), and it takes a very, very long time on the watch via WiFi, if it works at all.

Thanks. I have tried that on both mac and PC.....in each case it goes through the process but then when I disconnect the watch and navigate to map manager, topographic map it still shows the TopoActive map for Europe as "queued"

I am not sure if the watch has 5Ghz Wifi. Maybe your home network is set to only offer 5Ghz and not 2.4Ghz.

It is slow but this way you can avoid unwanted auto software update with bugs as Garmin express forces updates.

If Express has successfully installed the maps, the Map Manager message on the watch is an erroneous message that can be ignored.
To remove this message, connect the watch to the computer and use Windows file explorer to search for the file "garmindevice.xml" on the watch and delete it. Then remove the watch from the PC, switch it off, wait 30 seconds and switch it on again.

If you have a MAC :

Apple does not support the MTP (media transfer protocol). Therefore you need Android File Transfer to see the device on the mac.

Close Express including background activity. Then open Android File Transfer and connect the watch to the computer.

It may take a moment for the MAC to recognize the watch and display the file window.

Try it out.

It's no problem to delete the file. It will be recreated automatically the next time you start the watch.
