Fenix 8 - tracks measurements shorter

Hi there.

My first two open water swims are shorter than the actual distance.

- GPS tracks in the website seems to be correct.

- I know the distance cause I have had all fenix versions and do the same track for years

- I am looking to the distance field and it actually is not counting correctly the meters

I have not seen ANY comment on this :-(

Anyone having issues like this? might be sw or hw for my specific unit

  • Post comparative tracks for the same swim with different watches - the most recent swim with the watch you had before the F8 and the F8. If you have both watches take both for a swim and post the results. If you think you have a problem with the watch contact Garmin Support.
This is a swim I do several times most weeks and have done so for many years with the distance varying between 2500 and 2650m depending on tides and me.

  • I had the same issue, mesurements with Epix Pro 51mm = 1.400m, Fenix 8 51mm = 1.000m. I will return the watch !!!!

  • Hi.
I observed the same problem on my F8 in open water swimming.
The GPS accuracy compared tp my F6 and even 920XT(!) are 10-20% lower.
I did several swims with wearing F8, 920XT on my wrist  and a GPS tracker on my iPhone swimming on the water surface in buoy. Some swim I measured the distance roughly in Google Maps.
Turns out the measured distance on the 920 compared to Google Maps or the iPhone GPS tracker are within 3.5%.
While the F8 has measured distance differences compared to the 920XT of up to 15%!
Also I've seen some strange hicks in the track measured by the F8, while the 920 doesn't show any anomalies.

I have the same problem with calories.
While the 920XT has not heart rate monitor, the Fenix 6 has.
Averaged to calories/km or calories/hour, the F8 is up to 19% lower than the 2 other watches.
    Calories/km:
    F8: 242 kcal/km
    920: 262 kcal/km
    Calories/hour:
    F8: 598 kcal/h
    920: 712 kcal/h

Besides these differences I experienced a lot of software (e.g. loop reboot) and hardware problems (e.g. pressure sensor).
So all in all I'm very disappointed by this extremely expensive watch and would recommend to buy it.
