How to reply to messages via the Google Assistant?

Like in the subject of this thread, how do you reply to messages via the Google Assistant? In my understanding,  I will use the Telegram-app as example, you click the received message, then choose Smartphone-Assistant, and use the voice input to create the message. But this doesn't work. Even when using commands like "Reply", "Reply with", or anything like that. I can see the message I dictate on the phone itself. But that's all. But there is no contact or even not the Telegram-App selected.

  • Correct, you use the Phone Assistant and say, "Hey, Google/Siri, text George that dinner at 5PM sounds great!" You can't use "reply" in the assistant prompt.

You are simply invoking your device assistant, and you need to tell it exactly what you want it to do. I hope this helps.

  • Thank you for the answer. But why is then in the menu of the messages the option of the phone assistant, if it's not possible to reply directly to the message? And in case of Telegram, it seems the Google Assistant can't write yet messages. At least it says so. Is there any other possibility to reply to Telegram messages? I haven't found a keyboard or something like that.

  • I think they put it there because it's a common use case to reply to a message on your watch. I use Android, so I already have canned responses that are helpful, but sometimes, you might want a longer reply. Even if you have to tell your assistant to send the message to someone, it's still quick and worth it, in my opinion.

  • Thank you again. Maybe they have put the option in the messages menu there for an implementation in future, like a direct reply. I hope that as an alternative until then and the canned replies we will get a keyboard.

  • I really wanted this feature to work as I have several use cases but it's pretty much a fail for me. I've tried on several occasions to use Google Assistant to send a text message and it virtually never works correctly. I would not trust it at this point to send a message. There is no verification that the message was sent or that the message you dictated was correct without looking at your phone and at that point you would just use your phone to send a text. It functions no better than saying "hey Google" to your phone while it's in your pocket to send a text message. I'm debating returning the watch due to how different the execution of sending a voice text is compared to the Garmin marketing material. They specifically use the word "reply" to a text message insinuating that you can highlight a text message on your watch and simply speak into the watch to reply. That is absolutely not correct. Maybe using Siri, but definitely not Android.

  • I'm for the late reply. I would like to post a screenshot about the permissions Telegram has, but it's not possible in this forum. How would it possible to allow the Assistant access? Telegram is allowed almost all permissions, just not location, music and audio and nearby devices.
