Fenix 8 List Of Software Issues

First & foremost, this is a new watch and there shouldn’t be a single person who bought the watch that doesn’t expect hiccups in the beginning of a release. That said, I’d like to create a thread where we can centralized peoples problems based on your own usage. Maybe this helps Garmin as long as this thread stays on track and avoids arguments

Diving App - 1. The Compass heading (top widget) is too small, it needs to increase in size. 2. No Fly Time (Surface Interval) to include the option of a 24hr (no fly time). This is an option on the MK3i. 3. When you hit the button combo to save a heading, the screen occasionally changes.

  • Bug/missing from Epix series: Navigation alerts

  • Making a phone call with android (pixel 8 android 14) not possible. Speaker is muted. When cancel the call on watch, the phone stays in the call. also when changing volume in settins for voice no sound.

  • Ok I had/have this bug. If you look at the focus setting on the watch the app notifications will show "off" but if you select apps it will have status as enabled. So just move it to off and it will stop.

  • There's so many bugs it's kind of pointless to even report them. Just of the top of my head, after using the watch for two days::

    • too low brightness in low ambient light.
    • occasional crashes when manipulating Map Layers using touch (I'll try to get video of this sometimes)
    • with multiple maps from Outdoor Maps+, watch takes insane amount of time to boot (5+ minutes).
    • Navigation screens during activity show 1st Climb Pro climb, which is completely useless. There should be a way to at least browse through these.
    • No way to configure Navigation Alerts as on previous Fenix watches. Or change Navigation screens for that matter.
    • Cannot configure do not disturb mode at all. The menu items under do not disturb change current watch state rather than what they should, ie. what happens when DND is on.
    • When navigating, on the map screen, the current location arrow is way too high. It should be much lower. I don't need to see that much of where I've been, I want to see where I am going.
    • Phone call volume is so low it's useless for any practical application.
  • Most will be fixed with fw-updates. And new cool functions will be added. As with the Epix (Gen 2).

I am most concerned if it is possible to fix the speaker volume or if it is hardware limited. Would be nice to be able to answer and perform shorter phone-calls with the F8.

Have not used Outdoor Maps yet, but as I understand the CPU is the same since 2021.....

The price for Fenix 8 is almost same as for the Epix (Gen 2) in january 2022, adjusted for inflation.

  • Considering that ability to make phone calls with the watch was one of the reasons to upgrade for me, the fact that it's pretty much completely unusable for that unless you're in a quiet room and keep the watch close to your ear, I really do hope this is not a hardware issue. I don't expect it to ever be as good as phone, but it should be usable.

Besides that, I am really most concerned about crashes. Crashes during activity mean loosing the recording, and waiting for the watch to reboot, which is pretty annoying. I know these will be fixed eventually, but if I can't rely on the watch to record activity properly, then it's basically useless until it's fixed.

The issue with OM+ wasn't that prominent on Epix 2. But it's possible that this is related to specific map layers. Still, looking at the blue triangle appear and disappear for minutes on a $1,100 watch is not ideal.

  • The fact that OM worked better on Epix 2 sounds very promising for a fix for F8 then.

Have not had any crashes yet, but do not use the F8 that advanced, just plain running so far.

Garmin has tradition for releasing to early, so just have to look forward for the fw-updates.

Hope the new fancy UX is not too demanding for the old hardware in Fenix 8.

The bigger screen is a plus. Too early to miss the Epix 2, but time will show how smart the move to F8 was.

  • I've noticed another issue to add to the list.  The active calorie counter on Garmin Connect isn't matching the figures on my Fenix 8, which is a concern since I'm currently monitoring my calorie deficit closely.  Yesterday, the discrepancy was several hundred calories.  For now, I'll switch back to my older Epix and hope this gets resolved in a future firmware update.

  • My 2 cents:

    1. GNSS acquisition - Compared to Epix Gen2 Sappihre very very slow GNSS signal acquisition even in the same known location.

    2. Terrible recalculating course during activity.

Before run I choose one of 3 calculated Back to start course with the selected distans. After small changing the route
(I had to use the pedestrian crossing which was 50 m away)) after the first 5 minutes of running Fenix 8 Amoled started to calculate a new route.
Unfortunately, this took time so I started circling until Garmin calculated a new route. I ran on a new course, but had to deviate again.
The next proposal did not appear despite an hour of running. There were also no navigation messages when course was used.

    3. Radar Varia RTL515 reconnect and swith on without started activity or opened glances

    4. Teperature recording during activity - only data from Tempe

I have added Tempe as a sensor. In every activity Tempe is set as temperatur sensor set to ON. I coudn't set it to OFF. It grey and not acive. During Bike activity I havn't Tempe with but it connect for short period of time at home. In the result is that temerature isn't recordet from F8 (ambient temp from handlebar) like from Epix.

    5. No Radar bar on Curse view screen.

When I choose course view screen (this half and half view map and data) radar bar isn't visible on scrren during biking.

    6. Turning OFF Flashlight which was started automaticaly and set as a strobe by double pushh of button swiych it off. When switeched ON it light up as normal flashlight not strobe set in Run activity.

  • Auto lap by position disappear. (I have it on Fenix 7)
