Trying to transfer custom screens data for Activities

I worked a lot of hours to have the Activities customized to my likeing/ needs on my Fenix 7X Solar

For each activity I made 8-10 screens of data and each screen is different(4 or 6 or 8 fields of data)

Each field has a specific metric that I  am interested in and the order of them is customized to meet my needs

I do not want to waste my time again to do the same for Fenix 8

Is there a way to copy just these Activitie's screens from Fenix 7X to Fenix 8?

I tried to copy subfolder Sports (from folder Garmin) with all the Activities.fit to the new watch .. but there is no modification to the screens in the Activities..

Is there a good ideea to try to copy Settings.fit from subfolder Settings(Garmin folder) ??

Anyone has a suggestion?

Thank you

  • TL;DR I don’t think copying sports FIT files between different models of devices is a good idea.

Maybe a better approach for this would be to use the Connect app. Make screenshots of your activity settings for your Fenix 7X in Connect, then use Connect to change activity settings on your Fenix 8. It would probably be faster and more efficient, although it might feel slow because of the lag in the Connect app when you’re changing settings on the device.

If Fenix 8 is anything like previous devices, the way to install files from the SPORTS/ folder to a device is to copy them to the NEWFILES/ folder. However, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this, as the sports FIT files may not be compatible between Fenix 7 and Fenix 8.

I guess you could try it and if worst comes worst, you could reset the device to factory settings. But there’s always a slight chance that some changes you make won’t be reset.

At the very least, you could make backup copies of the existing sports FIT files on the Fenix 8.

But in general I don’t recommend messing around with SPORTS/ FIT files this way, especially across different models.

One thing you should be aware of is that there’s more to the watch than the files you see in the file system when you connect it to a computer. For example, if you were to delete all files in the file system (don’t try this), most or all of them would come back, bc there’s some storage that we users can’t access. (At least that’s what would happen on some devices in the past. Haven’t tried it recently.) As a simpler and safer example, if you program a custom interval workout on a FR955 (on the watch itself), and delete the corresponding FIT file, the workout doesn’t get deleted and the FIT file comes back.

So if you mess around with SPORTS/ FIT files and break something, there’s a chance you won’t be able to undo the damage without a factory reset, if whatever changes you make get persisted to the part of the watch you can’t access. The worst case would be that even a factory reset wouldn’t fix it.

In the past I’ve played around with editing SPORTS/ FIT files and copying them back to the same device. In some cases it caused some visual issues with my activity list which didn’t go away until I rearranged the activities on the watch.

Is there a good ideea to try to copy Settings.fit from subfolder Settings(Garmin folder) ??

That wouldn’t help in this case, and no, I wouldn’t recommend it. Also, the SETTINGS/ folder is another example where the contents would need to be copied to NEWFILES/.

  • No. Garmin has not built this in ie, you can't restore from a backup, so like Flowstate says, not a good idea, sorry :-(
