Fenix 7 SS (SW v22.06) semi-reset over night

I have a Fenix 7 SS on SW 22.06. During sleep on the night between 13 and 14 of August 2025 (today), my watch made a semi-reset by it self.

- All favorite sports are gone (when pressing start/stop button).

- Custom menues/folders are gone (I had for e.g. weather, health status, latest sports etc.)

- Morning report is gone.*

*The morning report did not show this morning (14/8) besides the image of when you have a race day (which I have today). All other morning report information didn't come.
I can now find the morning report options under "appearance" on the watch but only options are now: "Recovery", "Min. with high intensity", "Calendar" and "Weather".. sleep info, HRV etc are gone!
On my Garmin Connect app, I can still see the whole list available and adding/removing and then sync. does not help.

I have tried to restore the watch using the only back-up that was available (from late 13/8), but nothing helps.
I did a map update via PC the other day (Tuesday), but I think it was golf courses for the US, so not related.

What is going on?

  • Sure, but Connect IQ apps aren't the only ones affected. Regular sports profiles were also reset.

  • Today I was about to be content with myself for being on downlevel software and still using GE 7.25.00 from all what I read here and hooked up my test unit on 17.28 to GE BUT alas...

    Custom menues/folders are gone

that happend to me too. I was a little better off still, not all were gone but 50% only.

sleep info, HRV etc are gone!

Still there. But favorite activities hampered with too.

That means the problem is lying even deeper, I just connected to get new ephemeris data for GNSS while I had to recharge anyway. I didn't even synchronize anything in the process.

So for the time being beware of hooking up to GE no matter what version of GE and device software you have.

This is a new level of decline even from what we saw until now.

Is there any statement from Garmin?

  • YESSS THISSSS!

Happened to me 1 or 2 weeks ago, charged it on PC and synced it with express. I wanted to go for a bike, and none of the activities were there, i had to add them again, fields and activity setting were untouched

  • Come on Garmin, this was reported 2 weeks ago and you don't pull the Garmin Express update??? Damn, I did not saw this thread and went ahead to update my maps using Garmin Express and boom : no more favorites, no more glance and not able to bring back the ECG app...

If you don't want to fix the issue, the least you could do is to pull the update from reaching more users...

  • For what it's worth, I managed to get the ECG app back by syncing with Garmin Connect on my phone, restarting the watch, and syncing again with the phone. After that, the app became available again (had to manually add it to the favorites though). Not sure which step did the trick.

  • I tried this but the ECG app is not present on my end... I rebooted my watch 2 times and my phone 2 times to make sure but nothing make the ECG app come back...

  • don't pull the Garmin Express update???

As written before I do suspect this one is lying deeper. I observed it with Garmin Express 7.25.00 and Software 17.28 too when I connected 2 days ago if only to a much lesser extend. Ofc. I have done this w/o problems more than one time before even in this combination 17.28/7.25.00. Something happened in between. Nothing good though - again.

I'd suggest not to connect at least any systems to any Garmin Express which are not at the latest  level of software until this is sorted out by Garmin. Let's keep fingers crossed that they WILL sort it out eventually so this won't become another issue to live with for a very long time. I will not let my live unit with 15.77 near any connection to GE for the time being and use my test unit to fetch the ephemeris data for GPS/GNSS (GPE.bin) and then load it manually to /Garmin/RemoteSW for the time being. At least I will learn this way when the issue is solved from the results with the test unit.

Since most people who decide not to update or even downgrade for a reason and it might well be that this will mess with your device thoroughly and maybe w/o the possibility of a full recovery to the status before the mess up.

All others may decide whether they are willing to risk a lot of work to recover. What  seems to endure seems to suggest that even that might be an impossible task to achieve. So probably the suggesting is valid for all versions of software and for more than one version of GE.

Imho this marks a new low in what wee see in a row of bloopers lately since it is not even possible to avoid it staying on old software.

This is reported in other subforums too,   brought those together in the Software Subforum here:

Many thanks to MrWilson and all others who brought this to our attention.

  • Garmin software is a mess. I’ve been using various Garmin devices since 2019, kept switching back and forth between GM and Apple. Apple watchos is stable, rarely has bugs and if there is one, they are way faster to respond and fix.

  • So, there's another trap – Garmin Express. Of course, you have to use it because map updates haven't worked from the watch for a long time.

So we also have updates that you have to turn off first and read the reviews - trap

Everything takes months and some problems seem to take years.

I have the impression that something very bad is happening and it is far from the quality control that a company of this size should have.

Can we trust that HR, HRV, etc. metrics are accurate if the rest are flawed?

  • Can we trust that HR, HRV, etc. metrics are accurate

Opinions may differ but in this forum you can find my posts about the comparsion I made by simultaneously wearing my daily unit (still on 15.77) and my test unit (then on 21.19/22.06) about this and other metrics like GNSS, altimeter etc.

I found the answer for me and will leave my daily Tactix 7 on 15.77 for the time being.

Now I also have to avoid connecting to Garmin Express for map updates and ephemeris updates which is a new low in quality. Again: I do think it's not the version of Garmin Express alone, since I tried (and got deleted favourites and Glance Folders with 7.25.00 and the test system now on 17.28 too. A procedure which I used before in this combination w/o problems.

Fortunately I have the test system and can let this one be destroyed by Garmin Express to download those updates since maps and gpe.bin still can be copied from one unit and sideloaded to the other. Which is what I will do to save my precious running system on 15.77.
