Time lagging behind

Hi,

so in last couple months I have noticed that my watch is lagging behind in time. I do the GPS manual sync and it is good for a while. Since my watch is after warranty now they basically told me to go to repair shop of Garmin in my country and see if they can help which is baffling to me since it is all digital watch. Its not like some spring is faulty and time is lagging because of it but oh well.

Now after updating to latest software 19.41 I synced my time using GPS and it was good BUT only for one minute. The next minute my time on the watch was 8 seconds behind already. What in the *** is wrong with this?

Anybody else having this issue??

What I tried bit ago was factory reset, which did not help. In couple weeks I was noticing again the time being a lot behind. I do not care for 1-2 seconds but when it turns to 6+ seconds it just sucks.

At this point I have no clue what to do to help with this. Suggestions appreciated.

  • No worry, I am not offended. If you do not need any help, it's fine, just do not expect the problem fixes itself alone.

  • I understand all the points. I tried to go through the Garmin Support. Their only suggestion was factory reset which did not help in the long run. Second suggestion was to go to their repair center in my country and that it will cost money as I am past warranty now.

Was hoping a bit more of a help from the support which did not happen so I tried my luck here.

  • Yes, I understood. That's why I am suggesting turning off the BT. It can help pinpointing whether the delay is an internal problem of the watch (in which case I am afraid only the watch replacement would help), or whether it is caused by a bug in the synchronization of the time with the phone (for example not updating the timestamp at a repeated sync attempt after a sync failure). If you confirm that the delay does not happen with BT off, then you can report it to the Support, providing them these additional details, and hope they will be able to fix it.

  • I experience exact the same problems with my T7 and with the F7S of my wife, both running 15.77 still (so not to run into even bigger problems). Non of the devices are connected via Bluetooth EVER, no syncing with GC at all.

It started months ago that after resyncing via GPS the new (correct) GPS time is shown and stays correct as long as the answer screen from the resync is open. When we go back to the normal screen it takes some seconds and all of a sudden the seconds jump back (observable) to where it was before - usually some 15 seconds. At the beginning a hard reset (light button till off) helped and the next sync was ok and stayed ok for like two weeks or so. Now I manage every now and then to get a lasting sync after 5 hard resets. As for the F7S: we needed to reset it to factory for another reason and now we are back to the "if sync won't last one hard reset does it". Meaning it get a little better. I'm not willing to factory reset though and b/o of that and decided to live with it.

What really sucks is: you can't even set an exact time manually. It's only possible to set hour and minutes and even if you confirm at a given time, seconds won't start from this moment but are completely unfazed by it. So if you set lets say at 09:59:15 and it takes you 30 sec to set 10:00, it wouldn't start with 10:00:00 but 10:00:45 and switch to 10:01:00 after 15 sec.

I grew exhausted by this 1500,- software Desaster (with the 700,- F7S desaster to go with it).  For now: If I need the exact time, I take a backup device with me which I did for serious business before anyway as a security measure.

Never experienced such fundamental problems with my Tactix Charlie or Delta, should have kept the latter.

We'll use our Garmins until they break and that'll be it for me.

Btw: What really keeps me smiling is the questions what users make to buy a Fenix 8 or even 9. For me - nothing. Won't happen.

  • I 'Set Time' to automatic again and tried syncing a couple more times, and the watch is now keeping time.

    I am running 19.41

  • Great! Didn't work the first time 3 days before BUT today after another (one only!) hard reset, a set to manual, back to automatic and a sync via GPS my T7 is lagging only 2 seconds now. With the lately factory reset F7S it did the job w/o even a hard reset. The best I got in the last months. Thanks a lot, this is way better than before and the nearest to a solution we can have.

Thanks to all those volunteers out here in the forum. W/o you the devices would be next to unusable even as for basic functions.

  • What I did was set to automatic, then sync using GPS and switched to manual. Now I am waiting and checking every couple days if it moves more. Now I am within 1-2 seconds which is perfect but that way I am always after GPS sync. Then it just gets off more and more. Will see and update.

  • set to automatic, then sync using GPS

That itself never worked for me for months now. The lagging took place within moments after sync and with a real jump back to the time it was before syncing.

At least the method by foggy combined with a hard reset before it brings me back within two seconds - which is ok for me. The occasions when i need it exact are rare. Still: my mechanical watches keep the time way better, the radio controlled Casios too of course - one of which I carry as a backup if it matters anyway - as did the Tactix Delta over years and the T7 when it was new (and on earlier releases? Who knows, maybe even with 10.44 - 11.28, when GPS was broken almost completely ;-))

I'd suggest foggy69s workaround as answer here, maybe a admin can do this.
