Fenix 7 map contours disappear after rendering

Hi,

I just noticed today (29th Dec 2024) that map contours are not rendering correctly. I sometimes see them briefly appear as the map is re-drawn, but they immediate disappear. I have experimented turning off various layers but nothing has helped so far.

I have tried TopoActive maps in isolation, but I also use an alternative map, HikeAndBike-GBR, in combination with a better resolution contour layer, OpenTopoMap Great Britain contours. Neither are now displaying the contours.

I haven't used the map for at least a month so I don't know when it stopped working. I'm on the latest SW version, 19.41.

Is anyone else seeing this problem?

For me the contour information is essential when navigating so I and keen to work out how to resolve it.

Thanks Andy

  • Hi there,

I have a Tactix 7 (21.19) and have the same issue as mentioned above. It is really frustrating, I have tried a plethora of maps with contour lines. What i know for sure is that right now i have custom SRTM maps on my device. When i toggle contour lines off and on again, they show up for half a second before disappearing. So I know they are present and this seems to be the same bug as described above. I have tried anything imaginable, different combinations of maps and overlays, different settings.. What is the current state on this bugfix?

  • Mine is actually the opposite. I can't turn them off, but the same behaviour that it is off in half a second and then come back.

I've provided Garmin with troubleshooting material in direct pm.

  • This is interesting. I have talked to support today and as already mentioned, they are aware that since the maps update this is an issue and they are working on it.

Are you usinng garmin proprietary maps? If you are using paid maps from garmin, then I don't know how you could resolve your issue. I am using TopoAcive Europe which is preinstalled for free on my Tactix 7, and I'm trying to download open-source contours which then can be additionally enabled. So with that setup, contour lines do not show up (show up briefly). With the free TopoAcitve Maps from Garmin, there should be no contour lines available - maybe that will solve your problem → just delete the <some-file-with-contours>.img file on your device if you have downloaded anything from OpenTopoMap or similar.

Can you tell me, where to downloaded your map, on which you can't turn off the contours? (In your post you mentioned that you also pay for the + maps, so if those are the only additional maps you downloaded I guess I'm out of luck and you as well..)

  • It's been the same issue with Garmin topoactive, Garmin outdoor+ and my own third party osm based maps.

To simplify troubleshooting with Garmin now, I deleted all maps and reinstalled the Garmin topoactive for my area and the issue persisted.

  • Personally, this is not an issue for me, because I have the contours in a separate img file, so I enable/disable the contour maps instead of using this option.

Bigger issue for me is the problem switching on/off popularity and the topoactive during activity.

  • Ok, thanks for the info. I hope this will be resolved soon. Can you tell me which third party maps you are using in addition to the outdoor+ maps so I can test if I can solve my issue by downloading the same img files as you have?

  • A little complicated. I create them myself from osm data and contour hgt files from this site. https://sonny.4lima.de/

I can't link to my scripts on github now, since I can't reach github at all from my phone at the moment.

But its just standard img files.

  • Alright, thanks for the info. I guess if the issue won't be resolved in a reasonable time I'll try a similar method. The problem is I'd like an img for all of Europe, or at least for Switzerland. I tried files from many sources, none worked. I guess that you create partial maps for certain activities and not for a whole country. But it's interesting, the way you compile the files probably is compatible with the new maps app.. very interesting. I was thinking about that but when I talked to support today, they told me that there is no offical requirements for img files to work specified online by Garmin. So creating them in a way that they work seemed like too much of guesswork to me. I also haven't really looked into it yet, so I have no Idea about the process. If you happen to have a public repo or a code snippet, I would be interested.

  • hello the contour issu can be reproduce with France map from this website, and it was working one year ago when I bought my fenix 7 and first install this map.
