Sleep tracking no where near accurate?

So this has annoyed me for a while, sleep tracking is no where near accurate.  It always gets duration wrong, meaning readiness wrong, body battery wrong, sleep score wrong, daily suggested workout wrong.

As the pics show I got over 8hrs, reality being I’m a bit of an insomniac, I fall asleep okay around 8, wake up soon after 1 and that’s me, I get about 4/5hrs sleep.  I managed some online shopping, went to the toilet yet I was asleep until after 4am

Anyone else have this issue?

  • REM does not explain why sleep tracking missed 3 hours of person being awake.

To the OP,  from responses you got you can see that Garmin users find big errors in sleep tracking normal and within acceptable tresholds. Which is why I told you that you will not get help here. You can only here that it works as it should even though you demonstrated that it does not.

  • Has the OP made sure that his user details are set correctly in Connect? Resting heart rate, maximum heart rate, age etc ? Does this stored data correspond to reality? Has the OP set his sleep window correctly? Is the OP wearing the watch correctly (snug, not too tight, not on the wrist bones)?

For me, I can say that the Garmin sleep statistics are always very accurate. Naps are also well recognized.

  • Instead of asking him that you chose to say how sleep phases are somehow cause of the issue which is far from truth.

Moreover, HR settings are set by Garmin itself based on year and bodyweight and sport activities recorded, unless user changed them, which is unlikely.

Third, it was stated very firmly in recent thread about sleep issues that someone had that sleep schedule has no effect on actual sleep tracking. That flamed a discussion with no apparent conclusion but it was obvious (again) that for some users changing sleep schedule obviously does nothing to improve sleep tracking.

And fourth, just because you are OK with sleep tracking does not mean that other people are, and that is in no way solution for problem that OP asked about (or anyone else that asked for help on sleep tracking and those are, let's face it, quite common questions).

  • I have only given tips on what to look out for in order to improve sleep recording.
Secondly, it is not always the best idea to have the heart rate data recorded automatically. It is best to determine them yourself. Either through a sports medical examination or through a self-test. Garmin describes how this works in a support article.

And last but not least, you are one of those who advocate a general failure of the Garmin sleep analysis. This simply does not correspond to reality.

  • why sleep tracking missed 3 hours of person being awake.

The sleep analysis records ONE sleep. If the OP has been awake for 3 hours, the sleep is finished. If he continued to sleep afterwards, this is certainly present as a nap. Naps are recorded in the Body Battery. NOT in the sleep statistics. He should have a look in body battery.

  • Yes to all. The watch detects HR min and max itself, as for naps I just assumed that didn't work as its never worked for me either.  I've had more luck with previous Garmins such as Instinct 2, even my old FR245 did a better job than the F7

  • you are one of those who advocate a general failure of the Garmin sleep analysis. This simply does not correspond to reality.

    Not true at all.

If you actually read what I wrote you would see that I said  that many people have issues with sleep tracking especially in irregular sleep patterns and that OP will not find solution on this forum. Which is totally true.

I also said that your suggestion that REM has anything to do with inaccurate sleep tracking in such scenarios is wrong.

So, for this particular thread/topic, what I said is 100% correct. But for you it is easier to mislabel me as advocate of something than to admit your were wrong.

The sleep analysis records ONE sleep.

True. But with very inaccurate sleep times in this case.

as for naps I just assumed that didn't work as its never worked for me either

Naps sometimes work sometimes do not. Also note, it usually takes some time for naps to show. If I look at the watch immediately after a nap, no nap will be detected but if I get up and look sometime later I usually see nap recorded. The watch needs some time to recognize that you are awake.
