Why no GPS? The watch uses a combination of GPS and accelerometers to determine swim data in the open water. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Garmin has ‘tweaked’ the open water algorithm possibly leading to the problem you have. Turn GPS on next time you swim in the open water and see if there’s any difference. 

I swimm in swimming pool at the garden with my  swimming ruber.
I am sure that GPS is unnecessary - if will be enable it is completely meaningless measurement.

I think that i swimm in 50 m swimming pool fe7 watch calculate the average length of the swimming pace and this lenght calculate in open watter. 

last 3 month i swimm with the same settings 25 minutes about 1 km. But today it is 25 minutes and 500 meters. I try reboot fe7 and try again 1 km.. and the same. :-(

If you're swimming in a pool with lanes use the Pool Swim activity and set the pool distance. The watch will then calculate distance etc based on the number of lengths detected. A length is detected when a turn is made at the end of each length.

If the outdoor pool has lanes use the Pool Swim activity as you would indoors. If you use the watch in an outdoor pool with Open Water selected then it is unlikely that you'll get accuracy.  

The Open Water activity is meant for use in open water not in outdoor pools.

this summer i swimm (on swimming ruber) at garden 7m long  swimming pool at my garden about 95 activites. No moves no turn - the same place) Always without gos. Always 25 minutes and 1 kilometer. And only after yesterday FW update i have only 1/2 distance (meters). 

so 94 activities was OK and the last after FW 18.14 NO (it was 1/2 distanxe) Do you understand me ?

I had the same problem with the Fenix 6, I used to swim breaststroke in open water with the OWS activity and GPS off, the distance was quite accurate (checked on a marked 500 meter rowing course).

After an update the distance suddenly exactly  halved. The update addressed many complaints about OWS distance accuracy at the time.

I never tried OWS without GPS with the Fenix 7 (local water quality issues), but what you describe is so recognizable.

I generally don't recommend downgrading because Garmin does not support it, and does  not provide old versions, except the last stable before a beta version. However going back to an earlier version might work in this case. 

There are so few people who use OWS in this way, that Garmin gets maybe a few complaints and is unlikely to look into it. I think you still should report it, because this is a valid use case. 

My "workaround" at the time was to halve the 100meter alerts to 50m and mentally double everything. Not great. But still better than water that is not suitable for swimming. 

Swimming with a tether I’m surprised you got any results at all. Talk to Garmin Support directly. I suspect they’ll you the same thing.

A firmware update may reset the pace and distance calibration that was already present on your watch. To reestablish it, you will need a few true OW swims with GPS on. Not sure what the distance has to be at OW swimming, but for similar calibration during running, you need some runs longer than 1.5 miles (~2.4 km)

But i swim only in my swimming pool .. 

It is possible add manually to my profile “my avg pace distance”

For walking (step), in the user settings, you can set “your own step” length, but not swimming 

screen in Czech  (after FW i have half - 51 cm)
