Why has my 7x pro started giving me audio prompts for nav. And how can I get rid of these?

Until last week I'd get an audio alert for each lap. Now it tells me every single turn. Rather than just a beep and vibration on the watch, I get a voice telling me about upcoming turn, and then to turn (usually after I already turned) It's extremely annoying and I can't find a way to get rid of it. I can turn off nav alerts, but I still want the prompt showing on the watch, I just dot want to hear about it. Garmin support have been less than helpful so far. Any suggestions?

  • Pathetic response. It's likely to be such an easy fix if they just spent 5 minutes looking at it. So many people are frustrated. I had this feature on my 6X. No way in *** will I be upgrading to another Garmin if you're going to make your more expensive devices have a worse experience than older ones.

  • It's getting ridiculous. Garmin is spiralling down rapidly. So sad, since I loved my fenix 6 until it broke. But my fenix 7 which I received as an exchange just isn't keeping up software wise.

  • Thank you for the update Laurie. How can we send examples to engineering? What exactly is needed to get this acknowledged as a malfunction? Do we all need to write to Garmin support?

  • Probably not very popular but I love this feature, use it all the time during hiking, during running I use a shokz headset so if this will be changed please make it a toggle to turn on or off

  • We're not asking for it to be removed. It was optional on previous devices, and obviously should be now.

  • Why are engineers collecting examples and tracking customer experience. Isn't that your job? Is there any way we can better track this issue, not through updates to this forum post? I am assuming you guys have your own internal ticket system, service now, jira, etc... is there a ticket number or something? Is this actually being tracked in any measurable way?

The feature itself is great. What we are asking for a setting to disable it, because it can be super annoying when your phone starts talking during a hike Slight smile

  • I suspect the reason we don't see a fix for this is because on Fenix 8 these audio settings are now in focus modes, and I suspect some of the code is shared between Fenix 7 and Fenix 8, so perhaps without having focus modes it isn't trivial to fix this on the Fenix 7 side. But this kind of shortsighted approach seems to be typical for Garmin. Over the few years that I owned Fenix 6 and Fenix 7 I've seen a number of bizarre issues that I, as a software engineer, have a hard time explaining.

Also, if you look at Enduro 3 forum, people complain about the opposite - not having audio prompts for turns when they want them.

  • Agreed. And I can just repeat my thoughts here which originally I made in Enduro 2 forum. For me it is pathetic how freely Garmin define and use their own terms.

    1)

Turn prompts as a setting is under Navigation alerts (so prompts are equivalent with alerts !!!) together eg. with off course, and not under any (phone) audio alert/prompts whatever.

When there is an alert Fenixes and their equivalents are vibrating and/or give some plain vanilla beep/sound. The watches, not the paired phones. So it is a clear distinction between audio prompts and alerts/prompts.

    2)

Turn prompts  as visual and/or audible actions made by the watch had been working  for years without any enforced assignment to any audible action by the phone.

    +)

Instead of insisting on a chaotic state of things whatever the original reason is it would be better to think it over from the scratch and not just modify one element of the whole picture randomly.

    a)

As a positive example I regard the backlight settings which finally arrived at a nice and clear structure (I mean originally it was during activity and not during activity, while now there are 3 categories). It took just a couple of Fenix generations to get to this point.

    b)

Similarly as DND + battery saver + Sleep mode. Originally they were partly mixed up, now there is a clear structure around them (even if one has to time some time to understand the relationship between them.
