Why do you have to toggle "broadcast heartrate" off and on every time you start indoor ride?

Bringing this up again as I think it is a bug. Was the same on Fenix 6, now on Tactix 7 I see the same behavior. Garmin HRM strap works perfectly, connects perfectly to the watch....no issue here. Settings activity are to broadcast heart rate during activity. It will not broadcast in a way that my ipad picks it up unless I go into the activity settings and turn off "broadcast during activity" and then turn it on again. as soon as you do this toggle, the data starts feeding to the ipad.

It think that your way of using the function is rather atypical. Normally, when you use a HRM strap, you connect it not only to the watch, but also to any other devices you need, hence there is no need for broadcasting the HR from the watch. From this point of view, it sounds logical not enabling the HR broadcasting, when the HR is already broadcasted by the strap.

You did not tell which type of Garmin's HRM you use, but if it is HRM-Pro or HRM-Dual, then you can connect it over Bluetooth to the iPad directly. BTW, I am not sure whether it is what you really want, but you should know that the HR that the watch broadcasts, does not come from the HRM strap. It broadcasts the HR taken by the internal optical sensor.

The reason I connect this way is that I want the hr data into my Garmin data, not just into trainer road.

You are incorrect on the data it sends.AAs soon as you start your activity the wrist sensor goes dark and the watch relies on the strap for the data. The switch over does not happen till you begin the activity. If the sensor is dark, it's not doing the reading.

Well, perhaps on Fenix 7 it is so, but definitely not on my Instinct 2. I tested it carefully, and am 100% sure of it.

Not sure I understand. There is no need to broadcast the HR to get it to Garmin Connect. Or do you broadcast it because you have a HRM without BT, and the device with Trainer Road does not have any ANT+ interface?

Garmin HRM strap doesn't simultaneously broadcast over Ant+ and Bluetooth? My cheap 2016 Wahoo Tickr does and Strava has no trouble connecting over Bluetooth on my phone while my watch connects through Ant+.

Depends on the strap. HRM-Dual does as does HRM-Pro and Pro+. Can't speak for any others but Garmin ones with ANT+ and Bluetooth will generally broadcast over both if required.
