How do i delete golf maps on Fenix 7?

I read several discussions on this, and understand that I can delete map files in File explorer. However, my file names are different from what i have seen in the other discussions. Hoping someone can help me identify which files i can delete.

From Garmin Express:

I don't want these two; these are what i want to delete.

Other maps i have installed are:

so in theory, only 4 maps. But I have 7 files that look like map files. Can someone help identify them?

  • I had everything removed from my Fenix 7X SS about a year ago and since then I have participated in a number of ultra trail races, vacationed in the UK, Amsterdam, France and recently Melbourne Australia. I live in the Southeast Asian region and have not encountered any map related issues with this watch. Garmin Express just shows a ton of free storage space that someone on this forum couldn't comprehend why I needed so much free storage. It's not that I needed the free space, it's that I don't like space hoggers the same reason I choose Google Pixel phones for bloatfree Android experience.

  • The free space can actually be used like a portable drive to store and transfer your own files - images, pdfs, whatever. I have my own folder in the watch for this purpose. To transfer files, just connect to the computer with the USB cable. An added plus is that it makes me feel like a KGB agent. Nobody will suspect you have Top Secret files in your watch.

  • In my opinion a very good suggestion could be to have the possibility first of all to delete golf maps!
They are used not so often in my experience in relationship to all Garmin users!
And on the net a lot of forum £D etc requires to have this possibility!
If the Garmin help us, I think that Garmin will catch more users :-)

  • These are the maps and golf courses I deleted from my APAC Fenix 7X SS and backed up to my PC. The only one I couldn't identify is the last file D9241010A that I labelled as Unknown. I had all these removed for a while now, not experienced any issues so far.

  • Yeah, see the problem with that is that THESE maps keep triggering the error on my watch. Delete all other maps and still get the error. Yet when I removed all the watches manually via Windows Explorer, guess what? Error goes away.

Also, you can reinstall the maps via express.

Edit - and considering I want to have map data for places I travel to, and the nearly 5 GB of golf maps for an activity I will NEVER do prevents me from actually storing all the topoactive maps, it's a baffling decision.

  • That's a wild assumption, who doesn't play golf?Smile

  • It appears the maps might be named differently on some devices / for some accounts?

@ provided his file names below.

I just ran a test today: updated the NA golf map and looked at what file changed dates, and it is D2471500A.img. For Pacific, it is D2419450A.img.

I am deleting (backing up to my laptop) these,  but they are also relatively small in size compared to the other map files.

  • 7xPro Solar Owner here. I just found this thread looking for the latest correct file names, but could not find a good answer.

As the filenames seem to change (increment?) with each update, my best advice ist to backup them all on PC, then look at them with a Hex Editor (HxD is good and Open Source). The "real name" can be found in the first few bytes of the file.

I did an update today and this are the extracted names of the maps I have on my watch right now:

    'D1399510A - Courseview Euope Middle East Africa.img'
    'D9222000B - DEM Map China 2021.30.img'
    'D2419460A - Courseview Pacific.img'
    'D9225010A - DEM Map SGMYVNPH 2021.30.img'
    'D2471510A - Courseview America.img'
    'D9237030A - Topoactive RDA China 2023.30.img'
    'D6185140A - Topoactive Europe West 2024.10.img'
    'D9241030A - Topoactive RDA SGMYVNPH 2023.30.img'
    'D9214030A - Topoactive China Mainland 2023.30.img'
    'D9486030A - Topoactive Central Europe 2024.10.img'
    'D9218030A - Topoactive SGMYVNPH 2023.30.img'

    Hope this helps someone.

EDIT: Oh, and of course you can still use Garmin Express after deleting the Golf Course Files. Just don't tick the boxes to reinstall or update them and you are fine.

    Cheers,
    Frank

  • Chris, I’m not sure why you’re getting so defensive. The whole process around syncing maps on the Fēnix 7 is just incredibly brittle.

It took me weeks to get the Europe maps on my watch when I moved to Europe from South Africa. Both the watch and Garmin Express gave vague error messages. In the end it finally worked but I still don’t know why. Garmin Support was useless. “Have you tried turning it off and on again?”

Then coming back to Africa suddenly the Africa maps didn’t show. I hadn’t deleted them; both the watch and Garmin Express said they were installed, but nothing was showing on the map when I actually went for a run. Had to delete and reinstall the map in Garmin Express which luckily worked.

So yeah, it soes seem like Garmin acquired the maps software and doesn’t quite understand how it works, or whoever built it, built it badly and has now left the company so nobody knows how to fix it.

Something that should be so simple to do for a user like adding and removing maps is just so convoluted.

Not even mentioning the bugginess of Garmin Express. My goodness, what an absolute disaster of a product. Needs minutes to “find” my device. Then when you sync it wants you to disconnect the watch and reconnect it again. I get weird error messages about a file that shouldn’t be there, but it doesn’t actually help you fix it.

All of this makes me seriously doubt whether my next watch will be a Garmin. The combination of poorly tested software and a support department that’s useless really make me wonder why I paid so much for this watch. The hardware seems great (although the optical heart rate sensor on a device at this price point should do better) but if the software is bad, it doesn’t matter how good the hardware is, it just won’t work.

  • Hello

Garmin - Chris is no longer with Garmin. So unfortunately he will not be receiving your messages.

I am sorry to hear the mapping was not working. If you are still having trouble with the mapping not appearing on the watch, the Fenix 7 series has access to downloading these again. While you can download mapping over WiFi, it is more reliable and faster to download these using Garmin Express.
